Write with Writers in Venice is a unique study abroad program offered by the Department of English at Salisbury University. Venice has long been and continues to be a profound source of inspiration for writers drawn to the city's enduring beauty and mystery, among them Edith Wharton, Hemingway, Thomas Mann and Rilke to name just a few. Join this list of writers and be inspired by this magical city to create a portfolio manuscript of your own. Final dates for the program will be determined in spring 2012, but travel will be in late May or early June. CLASS: ENGL 494: Topics in English(4 Credits) In the semester before departure, in scheduled monthly meetings, students will meet with peer travelers and the instructor to discuss selections of writing from these and other writers with an eye and ear to specific craft choices, to what end are they used, and how they can can be used in their own writing generated in Venice. Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of above craft choices in short assignments due via e-mail to the instructor. While in Venice students will visit locations in which works of the above authors were conceived and respond with creative writing of their own which will be critiqued in daily workshop classes. Students will attend artistic and literary events that use language as a part of performances or exhibits at the world-famoust Venice Biennale 2013. A revised portfolio manuscript is due to the instructor two weeks after the return from Venice. Prerequisite: C or better in ENGL 102 or 103 and permission of instructor.
