The Venetian Art and the Venice Biennale is a unique study abroad program offered by the Department of Art at Salisbury University. Following a full semester studying Venitian art during the spring semester, students will spend two weeks in beautiful Venice, Italy experiencing the art and architecture of the city, from Venetian Renaissance master-pieces to Modern works in the Peggy Guggenheim collection, and culminating with the Venice Biennale. Final dates for the program will be determined in spring 2013, but travel will be in late May or early June. Enrollment is open to Salisbury University art students, alumni, members of the community and students from other universities.

CLASS: ART 399. International Field Study in Art (4 Credits)
On SU's campus during the Spring semester, students study key works of Venetian art and architecture, considering their different styles, ideas, purposes, and historic contexts, with special emphasis on Renaissance art. At the same time, we will consider the work of individual contemporary artists from around the globe representing their countries in the 2013 Biennale. Particular emphasis will be given to tracing changes and finding commonalities in themes, methods and approaches over time, and in different cultures. Students will also receive an introduction to Italian culture and language. Some of the key questions asked during the class are: What are the compelling ideas that have motivated great works of art from different periods? Why have they changed, and in what ways have they remained the same? How has the way that artists relate to their materials changed in recent years? Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.

THE VENICE BIENNALE: As one of the most beautiful and unique cities in the world, Venice is the home of a treasure trove of Italian Renaissance art. Every two years, it also hosts the Biennale, known as ‘the Olympics of contemporary art’, the oldest and one of the most important expositions of contemporary art on the globe.

HOUSING: Throughout the Venice program, participants will stay at a three star tourist hotel /or Monastery/ strategically located in the heart of Venice, within walking distance of the city's sites.

COST: Tuition and fees for the Venetian Art and Venice Binalle program are estimated to be $3000. The final cost will be determined in spring of 2013. The price includes: round trip international airfare, housing in a tourist class hotel/monastery, all breakfasts, tickets to museums, guided walking tours of Venice, all tuition and instructional fees for ART 399: International Field Study in Art and assistance by program faculty leading the group.

Admission to the program is competitive and program enrollment is limited to 15 participants. Students will be admitted on a rolling basis until the program is full.

Currently matriculated Salisbury University undergraduate students will receive priority registration on this program. Alumni participants and members of the community may apply at any time but will be wait-listed until late spring 2013.
