The International Business in South Africa program provides students an opportunity to study and learn in one of the most beautiful and dynamic countries in the world. South Africa is among the world’s fastest growing economies and is the powerhouse of the African continent. Students will be able to see firsthand how South Africa is changing and developing as it continues its transition from the Apartheid era. The program will run for approximately 2 ½ weeks in January 2013. We will leave around January 6th and return on January 23rd. We will spend the first few days in and around Johannesburg and the rest of the trip will be in Cape Town and its immediate surroundings. The program is open to all majors and satisfies an elective requirement for all business majors. CLASS: BUAD 396/696 Business Study Abroad—International Business in South Africa. This course examines the thriving business setting of South Africa. There will be lectures in the mornings and company visits in the afternoons. We will visit several industries including the financial (Johannesburg Stock Exchange), tourism, winemaking, healthcare, automotive, and gold mining sectors. We will also visit several sites of historical and cultural importance. HOST INSTITUTION: The program will be run in conjunction with the University of Stellenbosch School Of Business (USB) which is located just outside of Cape Town in Bellville. USB is one of the largest and most respected universities in South Africa and is internationally recognized as an excellent business school. Several of the lectures will be taught by USB faculty members. EXCURSIONS: We will spend two days and two nights in the world renowned Kruger National Park, which contains all of the “Big 5” (lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceroses, and Cape buffalo) along with an amazing variety of other African animals. We will tour Soweto, the largest of the Apartheid townships, and the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg. We will take a tram to the top of Table Mountain which overlooks Cape Town and the ocean. Other site visits include Cape Point where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, and some of the beaches in the Cape Area. HOUSING: While we are in the Cape Town area, we will stay in the Bellvista Lodge which is located next door to the University of Stellenbosch Business School. Hotel accommodations will be provided during excursions and during our stay in Johannesburg. COST: Estimated costs for the Program are $4500. Costs will be finalized in the fall 2012. The price will include round-trip airfare, room and board in South Africa, in-country travel and lodging during the excursions, and extensive travel assistance provided by the SU faculty directors, and the University of Stellenbosch Business School.
