National Distance Learning Week 2017 Events

November 6-12, 2017

Each year, National Distance Learning Week, sponsored by the United States Distance Learning Association, is held across the country as a way to increase "awareness and appreciation for distance learning" in arenas ranging from education to business and government sectors. Join us as we celebrate National Distance Learning Week with the following events and information.

Monday: 8 Lessons Learned

Tuesday: Creating Accessible Word Documents Workshop

Time: 11 AM - 12 PM
Location: Academic Commons 221, ID&D Faculty Development Studio

Open to any faculty or staff member creating content and information for distribution on the web or via MyClasses.

The “Creating Accessible Word Documents” workshop prepares participants to create accessible documents using Microsoft Word. Microsoft Word is one of the most widely used word processing applications. Instructors use Microsoft Word to share documents with their learners but may not be aware of the accessibility issues learners with disabilities may be confronted with. Learn how to use the accessibility features in Word to quickly create documents that will be usable for the majority of your students.  Addresses Quality Matters Standard 8 on Accessibility.

Wednesday: Beyond Soaring Faculty to Faculty Brown Bag

Time: 1 - 2 PM
Location: Academic Commons 220H, ID&D Suite and Online via BigBlueButton

Faculty share their experiences and lesson learned from delivering their hybrid, interactive video satellite and online courses developed through the Soaring with Online Learning program at Salisbury University.  Discuss strategies and tips to stay current with teaching in distance learning modalities.  Please join us online using Web Conference 1 and the password Welcome2SU.

Thursday: Creating Accessible PDF Documents Workshop

Time: 11 AM - 12 PM
Location: Academic Commons 221, ID&D Faculty Development Studio

Open to any faculty or staff member creating content and information for distribution on the web or via MyClasses.

The “Creating Accessible PDFs & Forms” workshop prepares participants to create accessible PDF documents and forms. Portable Document Format (PDF) is an open standard for electronic document exchange. Learners can view PDFs on any platform including mobile. PDFs look just like the original document and retain the source file information, but are only as accessible as the original file. Addresses Quality Matters Standard 8 on Accessibility.

Friday: Distance Learning Faculty Learning Community

Faciltator: Kathleen Arban, Social Work

The purpose of the Distance Education FLC is to promote interdisciplinary collaboration in the development of best practices for IVN (Interactive Video Network) and online instruction.

We will be holding an interest meeting on 11/10 from 12:00 to 1:00 PM in the Montgomery Room (Commons 214).  We are particularly interested in recruiting faculty and staff from disciplines that currently utilize IVN technology or have distance education classes.   Lunch will be served.

Contact Kathleen Arban for more information on this Faculty Learning Community.
