Teacher Mobile App

Canvas Teach App logo

Canvas introduces the Canvas Teacher app, available for iOS and Android phones and tablets. Canvas Teacher allows teachers to manage their courses and use Canvas more efficiently from a mobile device.  Faculty can:

  • Grade submissions
  • Communicate with Students via Announcements, Conversations/Inbox and Discussions
  • Update course activities - Assignments, Discussions and Quizzes

Canvas Teacher replaces the existing Android and iOS SpeedGrader apps. Existing users may continue to use the legacy SpeedGrader app though it will no longer be supported. Additionally, the Android Canvas Teacher Tools app has been discontinued.

For more details, please see the Canvas Teacher App Release Notes and User Guides for both Android and iOS users.

Assignment and Pages Duplication

Assignments and Pages can be duplicated in the Assignments or Pages index page. The duplication option is located in the Settings menu for every available assignment and page. When an assignment or page is copied, the word "Copy" is added to the end of the assignment name. The duplicated assignment or page defaults to an unpublished status. Note: Discussions and Quizzes currently cannot be duplicated.

DocViewer has replaced the Box previewer and Crocodoc annotation tools in Canvas to provide improved performance. DocViewer automatically converts common document types to be web-viewable and provides tools for annotation and commenting.

Default Home Page

Previously, when a course was created the Course Home Page would default to the Recent Activity Stream.

However, as of July 15, 2017, any newly created course's default Home Page is Modules:

Example of an empty Modules Home Page in MyClasses

Instructors are not required to use Modules for the home page and can choose another home page layout, such as the Syllabus tool (recommended) or a Front Page.

Announcements on Home Page

Regardless of your home page, you can enable recent announcements to appear at the top of the page.  To enable this capability:

  1. In your course, select Settings.
  2. From the Course Details tab, scroll to the bottom and select More Options.
  3. Enable the Show recent announcements option and click Update Course Details.

New Font Size and Icons

The default font size has been increased from 14px to 16px.  Icons have been updated for accessibility and translation considerations.  While most icons represent the course activity well, the icon for quizzes is a rocket Rocket icon for Quizzes in Canvas and might not easily represent assessments.

Update your Panopto Recorder to most recent version from Software Center or via MyClasses

During Summer 2017 Panopto was upgraded to version 5.4 on all podium machines and it has been updated in the Software Center. If you intend to use Panopto and have an older version installed, please update your Panopto Recorder to version 5.4.

Add interactive questions/quizzing and go to MyClasses gradebook.

While in the Panopto edit menu, you can now add quiz questions to any existing Panopto video at any point during the presentation. Panopto also offers Canvas Gradebook Integration so Panopto sessions can now be added as assignments in MyClasses and students’ scores on Panopto quizzes will be reported in the Canvas gradebook.

You can add a quiz from the Quizzing tab in the editor. The quiz options include True/False, Multiple Choice, and Multiple Select. The default is multiple choice. Each quiz automatically pauses video playback, allowing viewers to take as much time as needed with each question.

Example of Panopto Add Quiz option from the Edit menu

After you have set up all of your quiz questions, you can set up your Quiz Options, which includes options such as allowing retakes and blocking advancement through the presentation until the quiz is answered.

New capability: Embed YouTube video

The HTML Editor in Panopto now supports embedding a Youtube video within a Panopto session.  When embedding the video, you will have the option of specifying a start and end time for the YouTube video and you can control whether playback controls are visible to viewers.

Example of the Embed Youtube Video option in Panopto

Panopto offers a video tip with more details on how to embed a YouTube video into a Panopto Session.

New capability: Add/replace PowerPoint slides.

You can now add and replace PowerPoint slides by editing thumbnails on the timeline. You can delete old slides ("Events") and add new ones to replace slide content while preserving the lecture recording. You can access these editing options through the Advanced Editor.
