The Community Health major includes a General Education experience, a theoretical core of foundation courses, a series of methods courses and a professional semester consisting of an internship in the field of community health.

Study Abroad!

HLTH 490: Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Health is a short term study abroad program in Belize City, Belize. The program offers students the opportunity to explore global health through a service-learning health education project.

In partnership with Peacework and the Belize Ministry of Education, students examine cultural practices, social and political structures, health behavior, and issues of health disparities in Belize. Students experience global health firsthand by facilitating health education modules to local elementary school students and assist with coordinating an afterschool physical activity health camp for over 100 school-aged children in Belize City.

In addition, students travel to major historical, cultural and natural sites in Belize, including the ancient Mayan Ruins at Altun Ha, a visit to the National Institute of Culture and History (Museum), a guided tour and ziplining through the Rainforest at Jaguar Paw, snorkeling on the barrier reef of the island of Caye Caulker, and visits to cultural festivals (including Garifuna drumming).
