Admission Standards

To be eligible for admissions to the Athletic Training Program prospective students must first obtain admission to Salisbury University and complete all pre-program requirements. Admission into the Athletic Training Program is selective. Due to the competitive nature of this program, the criteria listed below should be regarded as minimum standards for admittance.

 

Pre-Program Requirements:

 

1.  The athletic training student must be accepted to Salisbury University and declare athletic training as a major.

 

2.  The athletic training student must attain sophomore status.

 

3.  The ATS must complete a minimum of 100 hours of clinical experience in SU’s Athletic Training Clinic. An SU staff Athletic Trainer must endorse clinical rotation hour verification for all hours.

 

4. The deadline for submission of application for admission to the Athletic Training Program is the third Friday in November and can be accessed at http://www.salisbury.edu/hss/ATEP/evalforms.html

 

5. The student must acknowledge their ability to fulfill the technical standards that are required of an athletic training student.

 

In addition, the criteria listed below should be completed or in the process of completion at the time of application to be considered for admission into the Athletic Training Program. The selection committee evaluates the candidates; and will determine who will be accepted to the athletic training program. The criteria will include an overall grade point average of 2.8, a minimum of “C” grade in selected core requirements and ATTR, EXSC and PHEC courses, an interview, letters of recommendation, and evaluations by an ACI/CI. After the interview, each candidate will receive notification from the Director of the Athletic Training Program regarding admission status by the first week of January.

 

Students that are accepted to the athletic training program are required to schedule an appointment with their academic advisor and register for the required courses. Matriculation will begin the spring semester of the following calendar year and will continue for a minimum of five semesters. Candidates who are not accepted to the ATP can appeal the decision by submitting a formal response to the PD within thirty (30) days of the notification.

 

Complete the following General Education courses:

·         PHYS 121 General Physics I

·         PSYC 101 General Psychology

·         MATH 155 Modern Statistics with Computer Analysis

 

Minimum criteria for acceptance include:

 

1.  A minimum overall grade point average of 2.8.

2.  A minimum “C” grade in each of the required courses:

• ATTR 185: Introduction to Athletic Training

• BIOL 215 Anatomy and Physiology I

• BIOL 216 Anatomy and Physiology II

• PHEC 108: Introduction to Wellness and Fitness

3.  Current CPR/AED certification.

4.  A minimum of one hundred (100) hours of completed observation at Salisbury University or an approved affiliate clinical site.

5.  A demonstrated knowledge and interest in the athletic training profession.

 

Application Materials

 

Upon application to the Athletic Training Program, the following materials must be submitted the Director of the Athletic Training Program.

 

1.  Completed Application

2.  Two (2) Letters of Recommendation

3.  Completed physical examination (dated after January 1 of the application year)

4.  Verification of current immunizations.

 5.  Verification of Hepatitis B vaccination series commencement or signed waiver of declination.

6.  Verification of Negative TB Test or Negative Chest X-Ray since January 1 of the application year.

7.  Signed Technical Standards

8.  Signed Athletic Training Procedure Manual Statement

9. Documented 100 hours of clinical observation.

 

Once an applicant submits a completed application, the Athletic Training Program Selection Committee will consider the students based upon the above academic prerequisites, letters of recommendation, clinical experience evaluations at Salisbury University, formal interview with the committee and personal and professional traits.

 

Acceptance into the ATP at Salisbury University will fall under the following categories:

 

1.  Accepted: A student is unconditionally admitted into the Athletic Training Program.  Students must maintain all eligibility requirements as stated in the most recent edition of the Salisbury University Athletic Training Student Procedure Manual to remain in good standing.

 

2.  Conditional Admittance: A student is admitted into the Athletic Training Program on a conditional basis. The student will be give a specific date to rectify any deficiencies to obtain the minimum eligibility standards. During the conditional admittance period the student must maintain all other eligibility requirements as stated in the most recent edition of the Salisbury University Athletic Training Student Procedure Manual to remain in good standing.

 

3.  Wait-Listed:  A student is not accepted or denied admission at this point due to extenuating circumstances or circumstances beyond the student’s control. Wait- listing of a student will be on a discretionary basis as determined by the Athletic Training Program Selection Committee.

 

4.  Not Accepted: The student has been denied admission into the Athletic Training Program.  Students will be required to meet with their academic advisor to discuss options regarding the major. Students may opt to reapply for admission during the next application period provided they meet all appropriate admissions criterion at that time.

 

Transfer Students

 

Students wishing to transfer to Salisbury University from another institution of higher education must submit detailed syllabi and transcripts of grades to the Admissions Department of Salisbury University.  The Admissions Department will determine which transfer courses will be accepted by Salisbury University for credit toward graduation.  Appeals of these decisions may be made to the Chairperson of the Department offering the course.  Typically, courses in the Athletic Training Program cannot be transferred and must be completed at Salisbury University.  Appeals of these courses may be submitted to the Director of the Athletic Training Program of the Salisbury University Athletic Training Program and to the Department Chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Human Performance.

 

A student transferring to Salisbury University can only become eligible as a candidate for admission to the Athletic Training Program after successful completion of the required academic courses (See Program Admission). Transfer students are eligible to complete the application process while enrolled concurrently in any of the five required academic courses.  However, admission into the program is contingent upon successful completion of the required academic courses.  A transfer student must also complete a minimum of one hundred (100) observation hours at Salisbury University prior to becoming eligible for admission to the Athletic Training Program.
