As announced at the Employee Appreciation Day event, we are pleased to communicate that Pascual “Paz” Flores, Plumbing Specialist in the Physical Plant – Building Trades Department, has been selected as the Employee of the Year for FY 2013! Please join us in congratulating Paz on this impressive award.
Paz began his career with Salisbury University in November of 2002 as the only plumber on campus and was assisted by an apprentice and student workers. Paz is a superb plumber accomplishing his tasks efficiently, expediently, and thoroughly. Recently, he was called in to repair a vandalized indoor fire sprinkler head. Once he completed the initial repair, he “spent additional time researching” and ultimately ensuring the mitigation of a suspected secondary concern, which was determined to be a life safety problem also caused by the vandalized sprinkler. In addition to the aforementioned nomination recognitions, it is worth noting that in the past few months Paz has become, yet again, the only plumber on campus and has assumed the lead responsibility for resolving plumbing issues regardless of whether it is day or night.
In May 2013, Paz was selected by the Employee of the Month Selection committee as the Employee of the Month for going consistently above and beyond the call of duty as noted above, but also for his teamwork. The nomination noted that Paz’s attributes as a team player are consistently on display as he always “welcomes and works with you to accomplish whatever task is at hand,” whether it is plumbing related or any other task that needs to be done. One example of his team work is his willingness to assist with snow removal to ensure safe access for the campus community.
Also included in the EOM nomination form was a note regarding his dedication and support of sustainability. Paz was instrumental in the installation of the water bottle stations around campus. He took the lead on researching options and then, upon approval, implemented sustainable hydration stations in campus buildings. The placement and installation was all well thought-out and organized, which made the implementation much quicker than anticipated. You may have noticed the customized cover plates added around the units to make the installations clean and professional. These were also as a result of Paz’s suggestion. These stations have thus far recorded thousands of 16oz. bottle refills thus reducing campus plastic bottle waste. In addition, it was mentioned that “Paz is extremely active with his family and community, a contagiously nice guy, and if you spend even the smallest amount of time around him, you feel better.”
In a note of support, Kevin Mann, Director of Physical Plant, conveyed that “overall Paz is what you want in an employee. He is professional, dependable, will do what is necessary to complete the task properly and go beyond when necessary, and always has a positive attitude. He deserves to be employee of the year and I am proud to say that he works in Physical Plant.”
