May 2013
Pascual "Paz" Flores Plumbing Specialist in the Physical Plant
Jim Miller, Assistant Director of Building Trades, submitted a nomination for Paz’s team work and for going consistently above and beyond the call of duty. In the nomination letter, Jim specifically noted Paz’s team player attributes in that he “welcomes and works with you to accomplish whatever task is at hand” regardless of whether it is plumbing related. An example provided was his willingness to assist with all types of tasks including snow removal to ensure safe access for the campus community. Paz is also a superb plumber accomplishing his tasks efficiently, expediently, and as thoroughly as possible. Recently, he was called in to repair a vandalized indoor fire sprinkler head. Once he completed the initial repair, he “spent additional time researching” and ultimately ensuring the mitigation of a suspected secondary concern, which was determined to be a life safety problem also caused by the vandalized sprinkler. In addition to his team work and extra effort, Paz is noted for his dedication and support of sustainability. He took the lead on researching options and then, upon approval, implemented sustainable hydration stations in campus buildings. These stations have thus far recorded thousands of 16oz. bottle refills thus reducing campus plastic bottle waste. In closing, Jim added that “Paz is extremely active with his family and community. Overall, he is a contagiously nice guy and, if you spend even the smallest amount of time around him, you feel better.”

Kathy Pusey Visual Images Coordinator/PR Specialist, Publications Office
Kathy was nominated for her dedication and creativity. The nomination form notes that regardless of the situation, which at times involves oncoming cyclists or quarterbacks, lab rodents, heights, day, night, or snowfall; Kathy will “do whatever it takes to get the shot.” She is simply dedicated to capturing the essence of SU. Kathy does this not only by being in the right spot at the right time, which sometimes seems like everywhere at once, she does so with her “creativity and great eye for what makes a good image.” The visual images Kathy captures are used to enhance SU’s website and publications. The images reflect SU’s energetic and engaged students, faculty and staff and impact how SU is perceived by people outside the SU Community. As the nomination notes in closing, “they literally see SU through her eyes.”

These not only demonstrated his proactive nature but also his tenacity and determination to see the two year project to completion. Leigh Ann Taylor Administrative Assistant II, Admissions Office
Leigh Ann received a nomination from Mr. Aaron Basko, AVP of Enrollment Management, for her commitment to constant improvement and superior results. In his nomination letter, Mr. Basko specifically noted Leigh Ann’s involvement in “delivering a quality visit experience to thousands of students and parents who walk through our doors each year.” In addition to arranging group tours (to include as many as 70 bus groups) and information sessions, Leigh Ann assumed the coordination of five admissions open house programs. Leigh Ann’s contribution to the visit experience included re-engineering initiatives which can be linked, in part, to “the strong surge of applications” and SU’s Rugg’s Recommendations list of “Magic Dream Schools – campuses that you visit and fall in love with.” Attached to the nomination were several notes from campus visitors proclaiming their individual excellent experiences and the superior representation of staff and student tour guides, attributed to Leigh Ann. In closing, Mr. Basko stated “the first impression that visitors have when they come to campus is the lifeblood of the University’s enrollment, and we are fortunate indeed to have Leigh Ann in that critical position.”

Mike Boolukos
IT Programmer/Analyst
Mike was nominated for the Employee of the Month award for his outstanding
service and excellent performance. His outstanding service is noted in the
statement: “Mike is always a pleasure to work with and, no matter how many
conflicting demands or what project he is assigned to, his top priority is
always the customer and the end users. When a project is given to Mike, you know
it is in good hands.” This level of service is supported by an equally high
level of performance as Mike places careful and thorough thought into each
project design even when presented with a simple idea which he turns into a
successful product. This type of performance excellence was recently realized
during the HR/Payroll automated contract renewal system project. “As a result of
Mike’s attention to detail, a carefully thought-out and efficient contingent
staff contract renewal system is now available to the campus community that has
streamlined the contract renewal process greatly and will be a savings resource
for SU.” In a closing note of support from Jeanette Wolinski, “Mike takes on the
unique and ‘never tried before’ tasks and makes them work. He is a pleasure to
work with, has a positive attitude, and loves a challenge. We are very fortunate

Maria Tawes
Human Resource Specialist
Maria was nominated for her customer service, compassion and dedication. The nomination form notes Maria’s customer service accolades are the "result of her follow up on faculty and staff health benefit enrollments, questions or concerns about their benefits, premium deductions, or enrollment changes and how she regularly goes above and beyond the call of duty to follow up with the employees, the benefit vendors and the Employee Benefits Division on outstanding items to ensure enrollment change requests are correctly and timely processed.” Her compassion is seen in her diligence in ensuring that employees do not experience problems with the processing of claims and when an employee is out on medical leave, Maria is "quick to assist them when they have leave balance questions so that while they are recuperating they do not have to be concerned about the continuation of their benefits. In this way, SU employees know that someone is caring and keeping an eye out for them.” Maria’s organizational skill and dedication again showed this past Spring while preparing for and during Open Enrollment of Health Benefits as "she carefully planned and conducted Medical Plan information sessions at various times and locations to make sure all employees would have an opportunity to attend a session” while simultaneously handling an increased volume of calls and inquiries about the pending changes. In addition, "Maria is certified as a Notary Public and always serves staff and students with a smile and a kind word when they walk in with documents to be notarized.” In a note of support, Marvin Pyles, Associate Vice President of Administration and Finance for Human Resources, stated that "HR regularly receives written compliments regarding Maria’s efforts. The services she provides to SU employees go on and on, and the delivery of those services is always exceptional. On a daily basis, Maria goes above and beyond the call of duty in providing customer service to our employees and students, and she shows sensitivity to and concern for the interests and needs of others. Maria’s customer service, compassion and dedication are invaluable to SU.”

October 2012
Bob Maddux
Multi-Trades Supervisor for Auxiliary Operations
Bob Maddux was nominated by Jim Miller, Assistant Director for Building Trades, for his proactive and exemplary efforts managing the increase need for maintenance activities as a result of SU’s growth. For Bob, the Comprehensive Housing Renovation Plan brought Sea Gull Square into his scope of responsibility in addition to changes as a result from multiple residence halls renovations. Jim noted that with the addition of Sea Gull Square in particular, Bob was assigned the warranty service program of the new appliances and the associated tracking, weekly status meetings, and punch list responsibilities. This is worthy of mentioning given that in the first four months of operation there were 700 warranty service calls reported each of which had to be efficiently and effectively addressed and resolved. This could not have been accomplished if it were not for Bob’s proactive efforts with scheduling and coordinating, not to mention his relentless follow up on open items. Through his efforts, Bob made it possible for Trades to not only meet expectations with the new responsibilities but maintain the expected level of excellent service for existing responsibilities.
