Guidelines for Loft Construction

PLEASE NOTE:  Bed lofts are already in place in Nanticoke, Pocomoke, Wicomico, Chester, Choptank, and Chesapeake Halls.

To insure the health and safety of resident and to comply with fire and safety guidelines, the following specifications must be adhered to when constructing lofts.

Approval for building a loft must be obtained from the Area Director or Resident Director for your building. The AD/RD will provide you with a loft construction form that must be completed prior to the building of your loft. Lofts built without prior permission may result in a violation of the Housing Contract. If permission to build is granted, the finished structure will be inspected by a member of the Housing Operations staff. Structures not meeting the set criteria will result in an administrative review for the purpose of correcting any problems. Please remember, lumber may not be stored in the residence hall and all structures must be removed by the residents upon moving out of the room. Additionally, University furniture may not be removed from the room in an effort to create more space for lofts. Please utilize the following criteria when constructing your loft:

1.  Loft may be no larger than 4' x 8'.
2.  Loft may not be attached to any walls, ceiling, or floors.
3.  Corners supports must be 4' X 4', or equivalent.
4.  Center supports -- 2" X 4" on 2' center.
5.  Cross beams (perimeter) must be 2" X 6" or equivalent.
6.  Corners must be bolted.
7.  Platform must be 1/2" plywood or equivalent.
8.  Must steps or a ladder.
9.  Loft must not obstruct room entrance.
10.  Materials must be of "good" quality.
11.  Two sides must be braced (angular).

  • All lofts must conform to established guidelines. A hard copy of these loft instructions may be obtained in the Office of Housing and Residence Life in Chesapeake Hall 1-A.
  • Construction must be complete within 7 days of receiving permission to build. Following construction, you will need to contact your building's hall director to have it inspected. Residents will be required to make any necessary alterations or the loft must be dismantled.
  • It is the responsibility of the residents of the room to make certain the loft is properly disposed of upon checkout. Failure to remove the loft, or have a loft approved could result in a $100 contract violation fine.
