Living Learning Communities
Living Learning Communities and specialized living
options offer first year Salisbury University students the opportunity to
live with other first year students who have a similar interest. As a
member of these communities you have the opportunity to discover more about
something you like while having fun and making friends where you live.
The resident assistants plan special programs and activities that
incorporate the theme of the floor. Trips, guest speakers and socials
are just a few examples of past programs. There are seven different
communities students can choose from when completing the housing
application.
Honors: This learning
community will link History 101 and Honors 111. Together, the two courses
will explore questions such as what does it mean to be civilized? What are
ideal forms of government? What role or influence does faith have in
culture? Can scientific, historical and religious truths co-exist? The
Honors community is a fabulous opportunity to learn and live with
like-minded students--join us!
Business: This floor is dedicated to freshmen students
who are interested in pursuing a business major while at SU.
Business is one of the most popular majors at Salisbury. The
floor was developed in the Fall of 2006 and has been a
successful and highly desired living learning options for
students. The Purdue school has a solid reputation and is
very “business” focused. The Business floor is an academic
focused network of peers for our freshman business majors as
they begin the first steps into this competitive major.
Our hope is that this program will provide a fun and relaxed
living environment for our prospective business students to
relate on a social level as well as in the classroom.
Programs provided on this floor vary from pizza parties, to
movie nights to in residence academic advising with business
faculty.
La Cuminidad: If you have an interest in
Hispanic/Latino culture and intend to major or minor in Spanish while at
Salisbury this community is for you! It is tentatively geared towards first
year students who have an interest in pursuing a degree in Spanish studies
and who will successfully test into an advanced section of Spanish studies
(testing will take place at Pre-Load). Space is very limited in this LLC and
successful placement will depend upon successfully testing into the advanced
level class.
Programming for the Spanish Cluster will focus upon integrating a cultural
perspective into day to day life, on examining study abroad options and in
community service geared towards the local Salisbury community. Students
will be encouraged to foster a moderately immersive experience for one other
through the use of written and spoken language, participate in multicultural
opportunities to celebrate holidays and festivities associated with the
Spanish culture and engage fellow Salisbury students in topical discussions
and awareness of cultural issues.
Education: Members
of this community will explore the many facets of what it means to be a
teacher in America today. The student will work with children in
school, both through classes and special service projects undertaken jointly
with the Education Department faculty. Students will get to hear about
the satisfaction that teaching brings, aw well as its challenges, as they
interact with faculty, area teachers and each other through informal
meetings, shared meals and visits to classrooms. Members of this
community will be enrolled in EDUC 210.
Green Floor: Open to all
majors - this floor is for students interested in the environment and/or the
outdoors! Programming will focus upon
both having fun in the environment and providing opportunities to do
something to make it better. Participating students will be allowed to
check-in to campus residence halls two days early to learn about the area,
to canoe, and to get to know each other. All students living on the Green
Floor will be able to enroll in two linked courses in the fall: Earth
Literacy (ENVR 102) and World Civilizations (History 102) - both of which
fulfill General Education credits for any major, and both of which will be
taught by the faculty who lead Green Floor activities.
Substance-Free: This community is
created for students who chose to live in a substance-free environment.
Students who live here agree to refrain from using alcohol, tobacco
and other drugs. They realize negative the second hand effects that
are associated with these activities and chose to live without them.
The Resident Assistant will provide unique programs allowing opportunities
for student to participate and interact with each other in the hall.
LEAD Scholars: The Lead Scholars program is
designed to facilitate the growth of new students
into
successful campus leaders. The program creates a supportive
environment and provides a variety of activities and experiences to
facilitate the development of strong leadership skills. Components for
this program include: attendance in the Leadership Workshop Series,
leadership opportunities on campus and community service.
STEM: (Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) STEM refers to Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Mathematics and includes some of the most exciting and rewarding careers
for your future. From actuarial science to zoology and
everything in between, STEM careers are critical to our innovation-based
economy. Alternatively, you may be interested in being a teacher or
starting your own business. Again, a STEM major provides a strong
background to move into some of the most in-demand teaching and
technology-based business areas. Ever think about law school?
STEM majors are sought by law schools because of their strong analytical
skills, and STEM and law intersect in areas like intellectual property and
patent law. For more information, see a STEM careers brochure
developed by the U.S. Department of Labor (

).
Salisbury University’s STEM
Living Learning Community will introduce you to the many careers that exist
in STEM and strategies to approach these careers. It will also provide
you with support for your first year in a STEM major. Not sure about
what major you’d like to pursue, but interested in science and math?
Then the STEM LLC is still for you. The common courses that students
take in the STEM LLC are general education courses that can be used in any
STEM – or other – major.
Wellness: The
Wellness Community is an environment where students not only focus on school
but also on living a balanced lifestyle. Programming is focused on a
holistic philosophy that promotes attention to mind, body and spirit.
Activities that student can participate in include intramural sports, going
to movies, decorating pumpkins and other various social events.
