Honors Courses

During the Fall 2018 Semester, the Honors College is offering five Freshman Honors Living Learning Communities (LLCs) housed in Manokin and Pocomoke Residence Halls. Freshman Honors College LLC students will be pre-enrolled into their Honors 111 course corresponding to their selected LLC by the Honors College Dean. All Honors 111 course will be offered in the two Honors College classrooms in the new Guerrieri Academic Commons.

Listed below are the LLCs for the Fall 2018 semester.


Honors LLC #1

This Honors LLC focuses on food and culture as a means to engage larger research questions across all disciplines. In past semesters, the Food and Culture LLCs have examined everything from "Food in Film" to controversial social and scientific debates about nutrition, animal rights, genetic modification, the environment, and more. Students in this LLC have participated in walking food tours through New York City and Washington D.C., neighborhoods. In the spring semester, students take a special honors section of Fitness and Wellness (required for General Education) that focuses on nutrition and food-related themes.

This first-year experience course for Honors College students examines the process for developing research questions and exploring the opportunities available to Salisbury University students for conducting undergraduate research. Course sections are centered on a theme, so that students can focus their studies on a common topic. Students will explore University library resources, participate in community engagement projects, and present their research in a conference-like setting.

This section is limited to students in the Honors Living Learning Community.

Honors LLC #2

This Honors LLC focuses on the caregiving element of health care jobs, with specific attention to how health care workers provide care for themselves and their patients. The Caring About Health Care LLC examines a broad range of topics across disciplines that impact health care workers, including emotional support, safety, and burnout concerns, work/family balance, and social attitudes about health care professions. This Honors LLC connects students with a variety of professionals working in (or in relation to) health care industries. Students take a special section of honors BIOL 215 in the spring.

Honors LLC #3

This Honors LLC focuses on controversies and questions in the business world, including marketing, management, accounting, economics, and finance. Students debate issues related to business and work toward completing a business plan and proposal for future inclusion in the entrepreneurship competition, where recent Honors students have won between $1,000 to $24,000 to start their own businesses. This LLC is open to all majors. Students take Honors section of ACCT 201 in the fall and ECON 211 in the spring, both required for business majors.

Introduction to Financial Accounting

Instructor: Julie Gittleman

When will Maroon 5 recognize revenue from its 2018 concerts at Madison Square Garden? Which iPhone model is the most profitable for Apple? What information is provided by McDonald's basic financial statements? This course explores the answers to these and other financial accounting questions by providing students with a general overview of financial accounting principles and concepts. Emphasis also is placed on transaction analysis, financial statement preparation, financial statement analysis, and cash flows.

Limited to students in the Honors Business Living Learning Community.

Honors LLC #4

This Honors LLC focuses on the subjects of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) as pathways to engage with critical thinking and innovation. Specifically, students debate how complex scientific concepts are communicated to different audiences. Students explore a broad range of topics related to STEM, including STEM activities for kids, STEM in social media, and STEM in the news. This LLC explores STEM issues off campus with possible trips to Wallops Island and the Air and Space Museum in D.C. Students in this LLC take an Honors section of BIOL 210 in the fall and an Honors section of Fitness and Wellness in the spring (required for General Education).

Communicating Science in a Changing World

Biology: Concepts and Methods

BIOL 210.01H

T/TH 1:00-2:50 PM

Instructor: Kristen Lycett

Introduction to the study of biology, focusing on how biologists know things and the study of the world of life, with emphases on cell biology, genetics, ecology, and evolution. First course required for biology majors. Four hours of lecture/laboratory, two hours online per week.

This section is limited to students in the Science Honors Living Learning Community.

Honors LLC #5

This Honors LLC focuses on urban planning, with a specific focus on the development of small downtown communities. Students study the influence and role of the arts (including music) and sciences (including environmental concerns) in (re)developing communities facing unique struggles and successes. Particular emphasis is on Downtown Salisbury and its hosting of the National Folk Festival starting in September 2018. This course is open to all majors, and students take a special section of HONR 211 in the spring.
