Hello! My name is Eleanor and I am a Junior from Frederick County, Maryland working towards a dual degree in Social Work and Political Science with a minor in Psychology.
My involvement within the Honors College includes writing for the Honors newsletter, The Saunter, and being the Honors College Student worker.
This year I am co-leading the Honors College Ambassadors with Kacie Cassar. Through the Honors College, I have been able to present at national academic conferences as well as gain strong mentorship and guidance from the college's professors. I am currently working on my Honors Thesis. I am examining the presence of employment discrimination towards returning citizens, previously incarcerated individuals, who have returned to their communities in Wicomico County on Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore.
Outside of the Honors Program, I serve as the President of Student United Way, a student led organization which promotes community service. For the past year, I interned for United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore as their Volunteer Center Intern through the Non-Profit Leadership Alliance, a national non-profit credential which prepares students for leadership in the non-profit sector post graduation. I love volunteering both in the local and international community. During Winter 2017, I volunteered in New Delhi, India, for four weeks with a vocational school NGO where I taught elementary aged children from low-income families and during Winter 2018, I volunteered in Cape Town, South Africa, for five weeks with an NGO focused on supporting children from disadvantaged backgrounds. This semester, I am interning in the Maryland General Assembly in Annapolis with the Women's Caucus. Through interning in the State House, I am focusing on sexual harassment in Annapolis, domestic violence, and child welfare.
I am also extremely active with the Social Work Department. Through the guidance of my Honors Thesis Mentor, Dr. Jennifer Jewell, Chair of the Social Work Department, I have been volunteering as a book group leader at Eastern Correctional Institution since September 2016, where I promote adult literacy and discussion with the inmates, which is the inspiration behind my Honors Thesis. I have also had the opportunity to represent Salisbury University at the National Association of Social Workers - Maryland, Student Leader Retreat & Conference. I currently serve as the Event Coordinator for Phi Alpha, the Social Work Honor Society, where I organize community outreach programs with the local school districts and non-profit organizations.
The Honors College continues to provide me with amazing opportunities and strong mentorship. I would love to share my enthusiasm with you! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at anytime.
