FUNCTIONAL TITLE:
Laboratory Research Technician
DESCRIPTION:
This exciting position will assist with conducting testing to define mechanisms of antimicrobial resistances in bacteria. Specifically in two areas, the selection of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus by quinolones and extended spectrum beta lactamases in the Enterobacteriaceae. Under direct supervision, performs routine bioanalytical, chemical, or physical tests according to standardized processes, and performs other laboratory activities and maintenance. Specific responsibilities will include performing molecular analyzes (NASBA, PCR, PFGE, Protein gels). Performs clinical processes such as cell or tissue cultures and prepares chemical solutions and media. Maintain lab research notebook, collects, records, enters research data and produce graphs. Performs wipe tests, general housekeeping of laboratory, and operation of laboratory equipment such as autoclaves. Additional duties include colony counts, ordering and stocking supplies and assisting other investigators in the group as needed.
REQUIREMENTS:
Requires Bachelor's degree in Biology or Microbiology. Preferred candidate will previous experience in a research laboratory and experience in routine bacteriologic techniques. Knowledge in general techniques in bacteriology and experience or courses in molecular techniques desirable. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Selected candidate will have general knowledge of the principles and practices of natural and/or chemical sciences and of the safe and proper handling and disposal of applicable specimens, materials and equipment. Must be well organized, able to learn new techniques, be computer literate, have excellent written and verbal communication skills and work well with others in a team environment. Proficiency with word processing, database, and spreadsheet software programs (MSWord and Excel) highly desirable.
Based on the contractual status of this position, the selected candidate is not eligible to participate in the bargaining unit.
CONTRACT DURATION:
One year with option of renewal
