Session I - Learning Outcomes

Community Responsibility Class $25.00

Students should be able to identify risk factors for developing drinking problems:

  • Age of onset
  • Family history
  • Reasons for using
  • Behaviors when drinking

Students should be able to identify the progression of use and accurately describe the definition of each stage of use:

  • Experimental
  • Recreational/Social
  • Abusive
  • Addicted/Dependent

Students should be able to identify the cultural influences that lead to binge drinking and negative outcomes associated with abusive use.

They should begin to identify their responsibility for influencing the cultural norms that exist at SU and the impact of their drinking on:

  • themselves (e.g. – grades, health problems including weigh gain, injuries, illnesses; money, legal troubles, relationship issues)
  • their friends – having to depend on others for rides, waking them up, vomiting in room, etc..
  • their families – disappointments, money issues, trust
  • the larger community – reputation of college students, dangerous behaviors that hurt others

Students should be able to discuss the second hand effects of abusive use from a personal perspective.
