Peter Smith

Artist's Statement

Most of my influence in photography is not from photographers, but from painters. I like to think of a photo as an instant drawing or painting. My favorite artists are the abstract expressionists of the 1960s, such as Willem De Kooning and Philip Guston. They have inspired me to look at the composition of an image as much as the subject matter. Because of this, I look at a piece of art as a constructed image first, and then consider the meaning. I try to compose pictures that are fun, enjoyable and intriguing; pictures that can be looked at hundreds of times and still found interesting.

In this series, I use water as the canvas to create flattened abstract images. Water is usually in motion, and thus, can create some stunning images when frozen in time with a photograph; something that would be impractical to do by painting. The ripples on the surface of water combine with light and color making many different patterns. In some cases, I attempt to control the ripples by throwing rocks or moving a stick. Photographing water this way has been both fun and challenging. I think back to my childhood when I took pictures for fun.  That is all I really want to achieve with my photography.
