Works by Daijah Richardson are showcased during the exhibit Divinity of Color.
Daijah Richardson is an artist born and raised in Salisbury, MD. She was always interested in the visual arts as a child. In a private Christian school where art classes were not available, she would create pamphlets to tell illustrative stories that were often riddled with dramatic tension, dynamic movement and bright colors. Once she arrived in the public school system where the visual arts were accessible, she threw herself wholeheartedly into art classes and afterschool art programs. At the time of her high school graduation, she was determined that art would be her field of study, but, to her dismay, her family encouraged what they considered a more logical path, which deterred her original pursuits. Thus, she joined the workforce instead. After 10 years, Daijah became determined once more to pursue her passion and receive academic training in the visual arts as a painter at Salisbury University. Daijah is also receiving training as a tattoo apprentice at a local tattoo shop in Salisbury to bring her style of creativity to a growing industry.
My aesthetic choices are based on emotional and psychological tensions via expressive use of colors, exaggerated use of forms, visible brushstrokes and high contrast. My art is a method of therapy involving themes of femininity, identity, trauma and self-discovery. I believe my body of work shares colorful narratives concerning who I am, what I feel, what I dream and what I’ve endured in a very provocative way. My artwork tends to boldly push its expressive narrative into the face of the viewer, dramatically and sensually, with numerous perspectives to enter the space from. I want to expose the viewer to a conscious narrative of rhythmic chaos and sensuous color.
