Still Motion

Sophia Park - Artist’s Statement
My
mind is like a messenger for delivering thoughts and ideas
through to my fingertips. I do not know where my ideas will take
me until it is resonated onto the canvas. My interest in Asian
calligraphy is a vast source of where my ideas begin to flow.
My recent work merges minimalism and abstraction from
inspiration through everyday experiences. Each painting
embodies a different form of emotion through application of
color, technicality and physical aspects that share a unique
bond.
Motion is an act, process, or instance of changing
place and position. “Still Motion” is the idea of my work being
captured through a moment of time—a moment of reflection through
the process of movement. None of my work has a verbatim
message, they are all meant to be an obstacle for self
discovery. Each painting draws the emotion at peace through the
smooth, serene orbs floating aimlessly in the distance and on the
contrary are impacted by sporadic brushstrokes packed with lots
of energy. Each painting represents the human mind and how we
interpret our everyday obstacles. I intend on my artwork to be
viewed separately, as each painting takes the viewer through a
different state of emotion, mindset and thinking.
Sophia Park -
Artist Biography
Sophia is currently a senior at SU graduating Fall 2013
with a BFA in Painting. Sophia has always been interested in art
ever since she could remember. She was introduced to art by her
older sister and has always been fascinated by what could be
possible by using ones hands and mind to create something
beautiful. However, Sophia never picked up a paintbrush herself
until she was older because she never wanted to become a shadow
of her older sister. Sophia started experimenting with mixed
media and watercolor when she moved to Salisbury, MD from
Virginia in 2004 out of boredom and from not knowing anyone in
the area. That summer changed Sophia’s life forever because it
opened her eyes to all the different possibilities that she
could do with assorted mediums and the excitement of the unknown
in what she was producing. Sophia will always draw that summer
close to her heart because without listening to her intuition
and her heart, Sophia would never have become the person she is
today.
Sophia is extremely active and is always on the go. If
she is not doing something, she will find something to do.
Sophia’s hobbies include reading, listening to music, yoga and
travelling. The possibilities in life are inexhaustible. Sophia
tries her best to fulfill her peace and happiness in life
through living each moment like it’s her last and to embrace
everything around her.
