Student Research

Salisbury University promotes and supports student scholarly research activities and creative work across all academic disciplines. These endeavors are integral to the teaching and learning experience as they provide opportunities for students to become closely affiliated with a faculty mentor and to develop skills and knowledge that will enable them to reach their academic and career goals. The experiences of working closely with colleagues in a research group help students gain needed experience and discipline as they become professionals.

Environmental Studies Major Jessica Johnson

As the latest recipient of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2011 Greater Research Opportunity Fellowship, environmental studies major Jessica Johnson will have a rare chance to study alongside some of the most knowledgeable environmental scientists in the United States.

Jessica Johnson

Johnson, a junior from Silver Spring, MD became interested in environmental issues while attending Montgomery Blair high School, where she joined the Student Conservation Association. Additionally, she volunteered with the U.S. Forest Service and the Maryland Park Service and continued her service after high school as an AmeriCorps member. Environmental classes at SU sparked Johnson’s interest in conservation policy and the EPA’s role in maintaining safe ecosystems.

“I’m hoping my experience with the EPA will teach me to do field work and give me more of a hands-on idea of how our actions impact the natural balance of the world,” said Johnson.

Following graduation, she hopes to join the Peace Corps before attending graduate school, eventually working for the EPA or U.S. Forest Service.

Only 30 of these awards are given each year, worth $42,700 each. The fellowships provide students with college funding for their junior and senior years, as well as paid internships at EPA facilities during the summer between those years.  Johnson is the third environmental studies major at SU to receive the honor of this prestigious award.
