Dr. Christopher Vilmar

The English Department offers a M.A. in English in three concentrations: literature (thesis and non-thesis); composition, language and rhetoric; and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages/TESOL (additional coursework is required and available for those seeking Maryland Certification in TESOL).

Applicants for the literature or composition options should have a B.A. in English or 30 English credit hours. For the TESOL option, other undergraduate backgrounds are considered. The program is 33 hours consisting of classes typically offered in the late afternoon or evening and can be completed in two years.

Teaching assistantships are available each year on a competitive basis. Teaching assistantships include a stipend and tuition waiver.

The M.A. in English program serves:

  • Area teachers seeking to enhance their skills and expertise;
  • Students who wish to teach at community colleges or small colleges where a Ph.D. is not required, and;
  • Students who wish to continue their studies in a Ph. D. program.
