Darrell Newton

Dr. Darrell Newton is the Associate Dean of the Fulton School of Liberal Arts and an Associate Professor of Communication Arts. Newton earned his Ph.D. in Media and Cultural Studies from the University of Wisconsin in 2002, where he specialized in media history, broadcast policy, and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). Experience in academic administration began with the Milwaukee Public School System and the UW Milwaukee campus where he served as an advisor and recruiter for the School of Allied Health. He has also worked in corporate communication as a telecommunications manager for Hyatt Regency Atlanta, and Avon Corporate Offices in Chicago. Newton has taught at UW Madison, worked as a hall director for UW Platteville, and taught for the Madison Area and Milwaukee Area Technical Colleges. He began working for SU in 2003, following twelve years at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater where he served as a lecturer. He served as department chair for the Communication Arts department from 2010 until 2014, and initiated a number of developmental changes during his tenure. He has several journal articles in print and a book, Paving the Empire Road: BBC Television and Black Britons. He is currently completing a series of additional journal articles, a monograph on BBC Caribbean radio in the 1950s, book chapter on the BBC and music, and is co-editing an anthology, Adjusting the Contrast: British Television and Race.
