Fulton Curriculum Committee

Fulton Curriculum Committee (FCC)

Role of Departments within The Fulton School:

  • Within the established guidelines for curriculum matters, faculty should formalize curriculum proposals after discussing the ideas with department chairs, and as department chairs deem appropriate to seek approval of other members within the department.
  • Once finalized and approved by the department, the department chair forwards proposals for FCC review, ensuring the following.

    • Forms and information are accurate and complete.
    • Attach rationale for the change.
    • Address staffing, library and budget implications and resources.
    • Ensure library liaison reviews appropriate proposals.
    • Proposals meet WAC standards; syllabi standards; Gen Ed objectives (if applicable); learning policies set by SU; academic integrity with course objectives and offerings.
    • Ensure proposal does not prolong time to degree.
  • The FCC chair provides feedback to the originating faculty member and/or department chair regarding incomplete or denied proposals throughout the process.

Role of FCC:

The purposes of the committee shall be to:

  • Receive academic program proposals (initiating additions, deletions, or changes) originating from the faculty and chairs within the Fulton School of Liberal Arts.
  • Approve or deny the above-mentioned proposals, route approved proposals to the dean and return denied proposals with suggestions to the department chair and/or originating faculty member.  The committee bases approval on all of the above in "Department Role" plus the following items.

    • Rationale consistent with proposal and explanation.
    • Department approval from those affected by proposal (e-mail).
    • Work is appropriate to course level and numbering.
    • Fits within the existing curriculum.
    • Meets credit requirement minimums and maximums.
    • Core courses and electives are appropriately balanced.
  • The dean approves or denies proposals based on all of the above, plus whether the proposals meet state guidelines, department mission, and budgetary and staffing implications.  The dean signs and forwards approved proposals to UCC, TEC or Graduate Council whichever is appropriate, and notifies departments and FCC of denied proposals.
  • The committee has six voting members: five faculty serving two-year terms and one faculty elected by the Faculty Senate serving a three-year term as a representative to the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee. The School Dean or designee, Registrar or designee, Library Liaison, and Advising Services Coordinator shall be ex officio and non-voting members. The committee shall elect its chairperson annually.
