Jay Martin
Jay Martin, the man who brought Community Sponsored Agriculture
to the Eastern Shore, is an Adjunct Lecturer in Environmental Studies
with expertise in organic gardening and community supported agriculture.
Jay teaches ENVR 495: Environmental Fiel d Studies: Organic Gardening,
an applied course taught on his farm. Jay has devoted his career
to organic farming, greenhouse production of seedlings, and the
creation of sustainable models for food production in a region that
is a global leader in the industrial production of chicken. Until
November 2010, Jay ran the Provident Farms Community Supported Agriculture
program, a watershed organization in the development of sustainable
local food production on the lower shore, which he founded in 2002.
Three other CSA’s have split off from Martin’s original farm, and
when he retired from formal farming in 2010, he left a strong local
food movement behind him. A long-time speaker to student groups,
this past spring was Martin’s first foray into formal university
teaching.
