Professor Wood Publishes “'Fighting Against the Earth Itself:' Sadism, Epistemophilia, and the Nature of Market Capitalism in Frank Norris’s The Pit"

Professor Adam Wood's essay, “'Fighting Against the Earth Itself:' Sadism, Epistemophilia, and the Nature of Market Capitalism in Frank Norris’s The Pit," recently appeared in the Winter 2012 edition of Studies in American Naturalism.  The article, which is drawn from a larger book-length study on the role of violence in American literary naturalism, examines Norris's The Pit and argues that market capitalism functions by tapping into the fundamental human tendency towards sadism, encouraging not only a "vast contempt for human nature," but also a fundamental hatred of nature writ large.
