Video: Professor Leasure Reading Original Translations of Old English Poetry as Part of the Fall 2011 Writers on the Shore
Series
The English Department's very own Ross Leasure read original
translations of Old English poetry at the September 29
Writers on the Shore reading. In the clip below,
Leasure reads an excerpt from a poem called “Christ and Satan"
in which Satan bemoans his having been cast out of heaven.
The poem is found in the Junius XI manuscript (so named for its
17th century possessor, a lexicographer and antiquarian by the
name of Franciscus Junius), dated approximately to the 11th
century; the manuscript also contains Old English paraphrases of
the books of Genesis, Exodus, and Daniel from the Old Testament
of the bible.
