Composition, Language and Rhetoric
Option, Plan C
The M.A. in English–Composition, Language and Rhetoric
Option (Plan C) requires that the graduate student complete a minimum of
thirty-three (33) semester hours (eleven graduate courses).
Required courses for Plan C include:
A.
Four Composition and Language courses:
ENGL 565 Research in Composition
ENGL 566 Current Problems in Composition
ENGL 514 Writing Program Issues
ENGL 537 Survey of Modern English Grammar
B. Two of these three Rhetoric and
Writing courses:
ENGL 567 History and Theory of Rhetoric
ENGL 564 Rhetorical Criticism
ENGL 595 Topics in Writing and Rhetoric
C. Five additional collateral courses
and electives:
ENGL
508 Methods and Theories for Literary
Research
One Graduate Seminar in
literature (ENGL 500, 501, 502, 503, 504, 505 or 510)
Two elective graduate courses, at least one of which
should be ENGL 509, 515, 535, 536, 538, 539, 591 or the Rhetoric and
Writing course (564, 567, or 595 not taken to fulfill the B requirement
above).
Either 1) one
additional 500 level English course and a Comprehensive Examination or
2) ENGL 530 Directed Research and a Capstone Project.
All
courses included in the program must be completed with grades of C or
better, and students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
Students pursuing the M.A. in English–Composition,
Language and Rhetoric who have taken any required courses,
such as ENGL 431 Survey of
Modern English Grammars, ENGL 465 Research in Composition, or ENGL
466 Current Problems in Composition as undergraduates will, in consultation with the
Graduate Program Director, select alternative courses to meet the
thirty-three (33) hour requirement.
Capstone Project
or Comprehensive Examination:
Students in the Composition, Language and Rhetoric Option
are required to either take a Comprehensive Examination or complete a Capstone Research Project before receiving
their M.A. in English. Prior to registering for ENGL 530 Directed
Research--the Capstone course--students need to complete a form which should remain on file
in the Department.
