Master of Education, Curriculum and Instruction
Department Chair:
Dr. Nancy Michelson
M.Ed. Program Director:
Dr. Gwen Beegle
The Master of
Education (M. Ed.) is a professional degree designed for
candidates seeking advanced preparation in the education
professions. The curriculum includes fundamental, theoretical
and practical experiences within specific areas of study. The
M.Ed. Program promotes continuing professional development and
life-long learning for teachers and educational leaders. This is
consistent with the recognition that capable and caring
educators are necessary for students at all ages, ranging from
the very young through adulthood.
General objectives
are as follows:
- Provide candidates
an opportunity for personal and professional growth through
graduate study.
- Provide classroom
teachers and educational specialists opportunities to develop
and improve competencies in their specific disciplines
- Provide educators
with opportunities for additional preparation needed for
professional development and career advancement.
Program of Study
Every student in the
Curriculum and Instruction Program creates a unique program
focus within their own program of study. A few examples include
teaching with technology, early childhood learning and
elementary pedagogy. Middle or secondary school teachers often
build graduate-level content area courses into their program of
study, combining deeper discipline knowledge with expanding
teaching skills. Applicants meet with an advisor to design and
update this dynamic program plan as they continue their studies.
Alongside the unique
program focus, every student takes four core foundational
courses on topics crucial to current educational practice:
research, diversity, learning and technology. Finally, each
candidate’s program of study culminates in a capstone course
that demonstrates his or her ability to conduct disciplined
inquiry on a topic important to their own teaching practice and
professional development.
Course Requirements
Course requirements consist of 33 credits, including the core
courses, the program focus courses and the capstone. Faculty
advisement is provided through the program.
Applicants should be
current licensed teachers or those eligible for licensure. This
is an advanced candidate degree program and thus does not lead
to an initial licensure.
Application Requirements
Application requirements include copies of transcripts, recommendations
and a statement of your own professional goals and aspirations.
Post Secondary Education Track
The Post Secondary Education track is designed for
individuals pursuing a degree for employment in higher education
or in agencies other than Pre-K schools. It does not
require or lead to an initial licensure. Often,
individuals wish to work in university departments such as
Admissions, Housing and Residence Life, Student Affairs, or Athletics follow this
track.
Professional Development
Persons seeking professional development at the
graduate level may take courses as a graduate non-degree seeking
student.
