The Master of Education (M. Ed.) is a professional
degree designed for individuals seeking advanced preparation in
the education professions. Like all education programs in the
Seidel School, the Master of Education represents the
Mission
of the University and the
Conceptual
Framework themes that undergird our programs: Scholarship,
Collaboration, Enhanced Student Learning, and Informed and
Reflective practice.
There are four unique opportunities for M. Ed.
candidates. Three of these programs are designed for the
advanced study of education by practicing teachers.
- The
M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction Program is intended to provide educators with learning
opportunities to deepen and expand their content, curriculum and
pedagogical skill for their current or next teaching assignment.
Applicants must have or be qualified for initial teaching
licensure.
- The
M.Ed. Reading Specialist Program is an
advanced licensure program, which is designed to prepare reading
educators in instructional and leadership capacities in K-12
schools. Individuals who complete the M.Ed. Reading Specialist
Program are eligible for Maryland State Department of Education
(MSDE) reading specialist certification. Applicants must have or
be qualified for initial teaching licensure.
- The
M.Ed. Education Leadership Program is a
second advanced licensure program designed to prepare
educational leaders. Individuals who complete the M.Ed.
Education Leadership Program are
eligible for the MSDE Aadministrator
I Certificate. Applicants
must have initial teaching licensure and two years of experience
as a teacher.
Individuals who are interested in the M.Ed. for
professional goals that require the Master of Education but who
are not planning a career in PreK-12 schools should apply for
the M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction Program, Post-Secondary
Track. The Post-Secondary Track has a focus on higher education
learners, practice and services. Applicants do not need to have
an initial licensure, and the program does not lead to licensure
for public school teaching.
