Writers-on-the-Shore: By Their Fruits Ye Shall Know Them: Shake-speare & Shakespeare as Competing Voices in Sonnets 103 & 73 with Bill Zak
Commons, Worcester Room, 8 p.m.
Zak, SU Professor Emeritus of English, reads from and discuses his recently published book A Mirror for Lovers: Shake-speares Sonnets as Curious Perspective, which seeks to identify in Shakespeares sonnet sequence the structural and thematic features of the satirical tradition born in Platos Symposium. Ewan Fernie, professor and chair of Shakespeare studies, Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham, describes Zaks book as offering a powerful new vision of Shakespeares most important as well as most fiendishly difficult poems. It will renew the Sonnets for their present readers in the most moving and surprising ways.
