Training Opportunities
Along with the variety of services offered to all students at Salisbury
University, the Counseling Center operates as a graduate training
facility for counselors-in-training at the master’s level. We
select individuals from an applicant pool of interested students from a
variety of programs in the area (UMES guidance and counseling, SU social
work, etc.).
Our training program provides supervised experience in the following
areas: brief psychotherapy, group counseling, crisis intervention,
outreach programming, consultation, intake interviews, college
developmental and educational issues, multiculturalism, research, and
wellness. The staff are committed to excellence in training and
the provision of quality supervision.
The training program is designed to provide supervised experiences in
activities which reflect the functioning of a clinician in a university
counseling center. As members of the Counseling Center
professional staff, trainees are afforded many learning opportunities.
They are required to attend all staff and disposition meetings, peer
reviews, case conferences, in-service programs and staff retreats.
They are also provided with one hour of individual supervision per week
with a the Counseling Center staff member and are encouraged to
consult with any available staff when necessary.
The focus of the internship is on the integration of the “counselor as
a person” and utilizing knowledge and skills appropriately in a
practical setting. The overall goal of the internship is to enable
each student to develop, improve and demonstrate her/his ability to
function as a counselor in a mental health setting.
If you are interested in being an intern with the Counseling Center, contact Dawn Harner (Training Coordinator) at

Brief Testimonials from Past and
Present Interns
"During my internship at the
Counseling Center, I was privileged to work with a wonderful
group of professionals. Observing and learning from them was an
invaluable experience. I was given my "wings" and encouraged to
utilize my skills as a social worker, which helped me develop
both personally and professionally. As an intern, I felt
supported at all times by professionals who show a willingness
to embrace those who are learning the field of counseling. The
experience was very positive and helped to solidify my calling
to the field of social work."
“The
Counseling Center has
presented me numerous opportunities and experiences assisting in
my growth in becoming a competent and well-rounded social work
practitioner. SCS offers the unique opportunity to learn from
and receive feedback from a variety of licensed clinicians with
a variety of theoretical approaches. Being part of the larger
community of Salisbury University, SCS has allowed me to not
only work with a diverse student population with various needs,
but also participate in outreach programming and collaborate
with other campus services.”
“Interning
in the Counseling Center gives students a rich opportunity
to directly apply what they are learning in classes, in
meaningful ways. The center's professional staff creates an
environment which is both challenging and supportive for
interns, and which allows them to maximize the experience that
they gain, as an intern. The supervisory philosophies and
practices upheld in the center are invaluable to interns as they
foster interns' identifying their own theoretical orientations,
techniques, and styles.”
“The the Counseling Center internship provides valuable
opportunities to work with and learn from the styles of various
professionals and to gain exposure to the common and unique
needs of college students. Interns also benefit from
collaborative work on outreach projects and from sharing diverse
experiences and perspectives throughout the learning and field
experience process. ”
