become healthier in 2011?
Do you smoke? Need some help
keeping your New Year’s resolution to quit? Are you just
considering quitting or cutting back? Maybe you aren’t sure if
you want to quit, but want to learn more about it. Or maybe you
need help getting through the day on our smoke-free campus. No
matter where you are on this journey, Salisbury University’s
Counseling Center is offering a Program to support and educate
you.
The Program offers
education on topics such as social smoking, health risks to
smoking, the effects of second hand smoke, benefits of quitting,
and medication. Information is also provided in regards to
nicotine withdraw, smoking habits, and cravings, including
crucial strategies for dealing with them. The Program offers
support and motivation from other faculty and staff participants
who are going through the same process as you.
Whether you are thinking about quitting, want to learn more, or
are determined to quit, we can assist you
in an
effort to “Breathe Easy” in the New Year! Join us for the first
session on January 10, 2011, at 8 AM.
This Program consists of six weeks of
behavioral and support intervention. Sessions occur once a
week for an hour and participants should plan to attend all six
sessions. There is no fee to participate in the program
and release time is available to participate with supervisor
approval.
A minimum
of 6 participants will be required to offer this program and
space is limited so please call early. For

The Tobacco Use Prevention & Cessation Program aims to reduce
the negative health effects caused by tobacco use in Wicomico
County. Program efforts are aimed at preventing tobacco use
through community and school-based programming and helping
people to stop using tobacco products through the Cessation
Program.

The Worcester County Health Department offers a variety of
smoking cessation services designed to meet the needs of anyone
ready to quit. Group cessation classes are offered weekly, and
are scheduled throughout the year in different parts of the
county. Motivation to quit classes are available to help
encourage smokers to quit and can be offered at worksites,
churches, and community sites. Teen groups and individual
counseling are arranged for you people ages 17 and under.
Nicotine replacement therapy is available to residents over the
age of 18 who qualify. Group and individualized services are
also available for pregnant and parenting women. Chantix (Varenicline)
vouchers are available to residents over the age of 18 who
qualify and have a prescription.

(patch or gum) is available through the quitline. Participants
will receive five scheduled calls with a trained tobacco
cessation counselor - and can call the quitline any time that
additional support is needed during your quit attempt.

Medication can be obtained by meeting with your primary care
physician and discussing your decision to stop smoking. Quitting
aids are also available through smoking cessation classes and
quit lines. The Wicomico County Health Department Tobacco Use
Prevention & Cessation Program may offer discounts on
medications with doctor’s prescriptions and The American Cancer
Society Quit for Life Hotline can provide mail-order nicotine
replacement therapy. Students may obtain quitting aids through
the Student Health Services.
