Warmest [and Wettest] Welcomings

Hello to all the wayfarers and wanderers – the vagrants and voyagers, suburbanites and sightseers! Hello to my fellow commuters! I hope everyone is finally getting a chance to adjust and dry off after a brooding welcoming of the semester. On behalf of Mother Nature, my sincerest sympathies go out to all those who didn't think to bring that rain coat. You weren't the only ones.

Now that the storm shows some sign of settling, at least, I would love to know what everyone is up to! Did anyone pop into the Student Activities Fair during the first week of classes? No fears for the ones who couldn't make it because I am here to keep you posted! There are a slew of events happening this September! Come out to one of our very own “Good Morning, Commuters!” breakfasts held in Cool Beans from 8:30-9:30 a.m. every Wednesday and stop by the Nanticoke Room at 1 p.m. for our first Commuter Luncheon of the semester and get FREE pizza and some great information on how YOU can get involved in on-campus activities. If I were you, I would hang around campus and come out to the Pool Tournament held on Monday, September 22, in the Gaming Area of the Guerrieri University Center (GUC) if you are up for the challenge. Or, come out to the Just Dance Video Game Tournament held in in the GUC Fireside Lounge on Wednesday, September 24, for all of you pro gamers out there! Both events run from 7-9 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. registration for all participants, but spectators are welcome.

SU has lots to offer, so come find your niche! I implore you commuters come out, try something different and explore what SU has to offer.

Best of luck, and happy commuting!

Noor Shahzad

Developing a "Spend-Thrift" Mentality

Graduate school has given me new meaning of the notion of being a poor, struggling, college student. When you add the costs of books, food, gas and car maintenance onto the ever-growing pile of financial responsibility, you begin to realize that your hand is pulling out of your pocket way more than it is going into your pocket. THIS IS BAD! This is how you dig yourself into a web of debt, a serious “NO-NO!” I had to learn to stop living off of the comfort that my credit card gave me by allotting a few extra dollars every month that I could not afford to pay back to actually developing a “Spend-Thrift” mentality.

What is a “Spend-Thrift” mentality, you say? Well, being a “Spend-Thrift” is when you consciously review every purchase before you make it. Do I need this? Can I afford this right now? Can I find this item cheaper? Make conscious decisions before you spend your money and you will find that you have way more to spend. I am completely guilty of going to Cool Beans for a smoothie and picking up a candy bar just because it is there. This might be a minor purchase to you, but when you are living on a fixed income all purchases must be accounted for.

So try it, think about your purchases before you swipe!
