ENVR 499: Environmental Senior Seminar
"Civic Engagement - Stewardship of Public Resources"
As part of the new Environmental Issues program at Salisbury
University, a small group of students are examining the Maryland Forest
Conservation Act. The Forest Conservation Act is a state wide policy
which mandates the protection of a percentage of forests on new
developments. Our goals are to examine the policy, then advocate for any
necessary changes, and finally to educate others.
To determine if the Act is effective or not, we are going to learn if
it is preserving forests in Wicomico County. Additionally we will be
looking at current development sites to see how these regulations are
being applied. If it is ineffective or being inappropriately applied, we
will identify any loopholes, lack of communication, or weak areas where
we could assist to remedy these problems.
We will be contacting officials, environmentalists, developers, and
community members who can provide insight and information. In December
we will present our findings to this same group of people in addition to
the greater public with the goal of increasing the success of the Forest
Conservation Act.
