The
Civic and Government Leadership Academy (CGLA)
is a non-partisan
program whose mission is to inspire and to encourage local citizens
from all segments of the population to participate in civic affairs
for the purpose of facilitating positive change in our community and
promoting better government at the local level.
Two sessions have been held. The
first pilot session (2004) was held for seven consecutive
two-hour sessions on Tuesday evenings from February 17, 2004 through
March 30, 2004.
The second and most recent session
(2006) was held from April 4, 2006 - May 16,
2006.

Objectives
Through educational programs and the
development of leadership skills, the Academy seeks to provide a more
informed and responsible citizenry, enhance participants' preparation for
leadership opportunities, and enable aspiring civic leaders to be more
effective candidates and officeholders. The Academy's programs are
designed for citizens interested in elected office, appointment to boards
and commissions, or individuals who simply wish to be better informed
about their local government.
Description
CGLA is an
intensive seven-week evening program designed for future community
leaders. Sessions run for seven evenings (one a week) from 7-9 PM.
Faculty are drawn from respected leaders in the community, university
professors and nationally known speakers. Any community member interested
in civic activism and governmental leadership in the lower Eastern Shore
of Maryland is invited to enroll in the program. By developing leadership
skills and training responsible officials, CGLA serves not only those
enrolled in the program, but the entire community as well. Everyone
residing in Maryland's Eastern Shore stands to gain from this program.
