Trainings/Workshops

Interpreting Nature & Heritage Sites for Visitors

Are you a visitor guide at a nature or heritage site on Delmarva-- or interested in becoming one? Increase your knowledge, confidence and skills at this four-part training through Wor-Wic Community College.

November 3rd: Crisfield Heritage Foundation

November 5th: Furnace Town

November 10th: Delmarva Discovery Center

November 12th: Salisbury Zoo

The Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore is providing scholarships to cover the cost of registration for partner staff and volunteers (see attached for more information). Folks over 60 can also register for free with Wor-Wic. This is a great course for those who are involved with local nonprofits, nature, heritage, etc.

Mentoring Workshops

"Making & Maintaining Relationships" - Thursday, November 6th at 5:30 p.m.

"Technology Terrors: Cyber Bullying" - Tuesday, November 11th at 5:30 p.m.

The Wicomico Mentoring Project has teamed up with several Lower Eastern Shore mentoring programs; Big Brothers Big Sisters, Project H.O.P.E., and the Greater Expectations Mentoring Partnership to provide supplemental training to our mentors. Our efforts are supported by the Maryland Mentoring Partnership and Salisbury's Promise.

We are excited to offer two free and informative workshops this fall. On Thursday, November 6, Kimberly Conway Dumpson of UMES will be presenting a workshop on "Making and Maintaining Relationships" and on Tuesday, November 11, a workshop on "Technology Terrors -- Cyber Bullying" will be presented by Detective Seichepine of the Wicomico Advocacy Center. Both of these sessions will be held at WCBOE from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. A mentoring roundtable will be at 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for those who would like to participate.

Attached is a registration form and more details about these workshops. Whether you are considering being a mentor, perhaps just beginning a mentoring relationship or have been mentoring for awhile, you shouldn't miss out on this great opportunity to gain insight and relevant information on today's youth.

One-Day Workshop: "Understanding Youth Culture: From Rock to Hip Hop and All the Drama In Between"

Monday, November 10th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If you live on the Eastern Shore, you don't want to miss "Understanding Youth Culture: From Rock to Hip Hop and All the Drama In Between." This one day, interactive workshop designed by the Urban Leadership Institute for teachers, parents, clergy, social workers, or anyone concerned about young people is a major step toward understanding your tweens and teens.

By the time you leave this workshop, you should be able to know what your kids are saying. It will also help you to understand what the images and symbols of the current youth culture mean.

CPR/First Aid Training with the Red Cross

The Red Cross will be conducting a free-to-you CPR/First Aid training on Saturday, November 1st at SU. The exact room for the training will be announced closer to the date. The training will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude around 2:30 p.m. (or earlier) and an all-you-care-to-eat lunch at the Commons is free for members in the middle of the day.

Short-term projects

October 2008

“Operation Warm Up” (HALO)

The Hope And Life Outreach (HALO) Organization is kicking off their Operation Warm Up as a part of the Wicomico County Coalition for the Homeless “Code Blue” initiative. As the weather changes over the next several months, those in our community who live in substandard housing or on the streets will be faced with nights of sub-zero temperatures. Many in our community suffer every year during these cold spells, including some of the 1,350 children registered as homeless in Wicomico County.The Code Blue initiative, which runs from January 1st to March 31st, provides temporary shelters for women and children trying to survive in frigid temperatures.

Right now, HALO needs the following items for people of all ages:

cold weather clothing

coats

sweaters

gloves

hats

The organization will be collecting the items between October 19th and October 31st at their office location at 321 Tilghman Road, suite 206, in the K-mart shopping center.

HALO programs include food pantries, a bargain center, HALO housing, HALO On The Streets (feeding & meeting with the homeless at their camps), drug and alcohol rehabilitation, personal mentoring; and couponing and budgeting for families and single moms, employment assistance, career development, healthy cooking on a budget, and more. Ocean City Coastal Bays Nature Clinic

Kids will be invited to "Become a wildlife scientist and discover what it takes to keep a heron happy, a terrapin tickled, a horseshoe crab content and a pipefish pleased. Learn what kids can do to help improve their own backyards and make our world a better place for the coastal bays and our animal friends. In this hands-on clinic, participants will experience nature up-close!" Members are need to help out at these programs so take a look at the following details:

Junior Achievement After-School Program

Starting the week of October 20th (day of week to be determined by volunteer), Junior Acheivement will be holding an after-school program at the East Salisbury Family Center from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. The after-school program will run from the week of the 20th for 5 weeks (week of 20th, 27th, November 3rd, 10th & 17th).

Gimme 5 Youth Day!

Salisbury’s Promise, the local branch of America’s Promise, is holding it's annual "Gimme 5" Youth Day event on Saturday, October 25th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pemberton Elementary School. Gimme 5 Youth Day is a fair-like event, where various non-profit agencies, civic organizations, faith groups, county schools, and business partners collaborate in order to provide the Five Promises to all youth in attendance.

Salisbury's Promise needs volunteers through out the day to help run games and activities from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then to travel to Pemberton Park from 1 to 3 p.m. to participate in a community service activity. If weather permits, volunteers and the children will be laying mulch and helping to spruce up the area.

Members: 2 to 3 members are needed do their Master's of Disaster teaching at Gimme 5. You will have your own table from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and need to create a quick activity to do with the children that visit your table. The disaster kit has tons of great ideas.

AmeriCorps Launch / Make A Difference Day

Starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 25th in Baltimore, MD, Maryland state AmeriCorps members will meet at the Druid Hill park to kick-off another great year of service! At 9 a.m., AmeriCorps members will collaborate with community members on the Make A Difference Day projects.

The Maryland GOSV has partnered with BVU's Volunteer Central to host the annual Make a Difference Day in Baltimore and they would like you to join them, if you are able, in order to clean up parks and schools in Baltimore. Sign-up is over for this project! Amanda, Christina, Enock and Shawnise will be attending from ShoreCorps/PALS.

 

Living Shoreline Project

Worcester County is scheduled to start construction of the Gum Point Rd Boat Ramp living shoreline on Monday, October 27th from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. While Worcester county has some staff to work on this, volunteers are needed to help move 12"-18" rock from the shoreline to 30' into the water for creation of a sill. Some work can be done with machine, but work by hand will also be needed. Volunteers will need to be willing to get wet and lift rock. Individuals do not need to stay for this entire period.

Junior Achievement Teaching Opportunities

Junior Achievement is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating young people about business, economics, and free enterprise in order to improve the quality of their lives. Programs span grades K-12, with age-appropriate curricula designed to teach elementary students about their roles as individuals, workers, and consumers and to prepare middle grade and high school students for key economic and workforce issues they will face. In addition to bringing the free enterprise system to life in the classroom, Junior Achievement programs teach young people the importance of staying in school.

Volunteers are needed to teach JA lessons in classrooms in our area through Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore. All teaching materials, etc are provided! The following JA teaching opportunities are available during November:

One week: Monday through Friday, one 45 minute class per day (traditional structure)

-November 10th through 14th at either 1 p.m. or 1:15 p.m. at Prince Street Elementary School (3rd or 4th grades)

Salisbury Urban Ministries Holiday Party (sponsored by Salisbury's Promise)

Tentative Date: Tuesday, December 9th

Members are invited to join this group project which will need to be planned during the next couple of months. The party is held at Grace United Methodist Church off of Church Street in Salisbury (next door to SUM). More information to follow.

Code Blue Shelter for Women & Children

The Wicomico County Homeless Coalition is planning to reopen the Code Blue Shelter for Women and Children this winter. Volunteers and supplies are needed to make this vital service viable for our most vulnerable residents in Wicomico County. The Shelter operated last year for the first time and served 15 women and 3 children. This year the Women and Children’s shelter will plan to expand services to be open each night beginning January 1, 2008 until March 31, 2008. This year the project will be facilitated by H.A.L.O. Hope and Life Outreach Ministries. Questions about how individuals can help can be directed to Celeste Savage at 410-742-9356.
