Frequently Asked Questions

Please be advised these questions and answers should only be used as references
for master degree candidates. Those receiving bachelor degrees should refer to the undergraduate commencement website.

QUESTION:     When is the Graduate Commencement ceremony?

ANSWER:        Graduate Commencement is held each May one day prior to the undergraduate
                       commencement ceremony. Graduates scheduled to complete degree
                       requirements in December may request to defer their participation in
                       commencement activities until spring.

QUESTION:     How is the date for commencement selected?

ANSWER:        The Commencement ceremony is on the day immediately following the last day
                       of final exams with some other considerations, including but not limited to,
                       holidays and venue availability.

TICKETS                                                                                                                          

QUESTION:     How many guest tickets will each graduate receive?

ANSWER:        There is no current limit to the number of tickets each graduate will receive at the
                       May ceremony (subject to change if necessary).

QUESTION:     How do I get my tickets?

ANSWER:        Tickets will be distributed with caps and gowns at the Graduation Pick-Up Fair at
                       the Bookstore, April 14-18, 2014.

QUESTION:      As a guest, can I obtain a ticket directly?

ANSWER:         No, tickets are issued to graduating students only. It is up to each student to
                        invite his or her guests.

QUESTION:     Who needs a ticket go get into the ceremony?

ANSWER:        All guests entering the Civic Center will need a ticket.  Children of all ages
                       require a ticket, including babies and young children. Graduates do not need a
                       ticket. 

CAP, GOWN and HOOD                                                                                                   

QUESTION:     I am not on campus because of an internship or study abroad. How can
                       I take care of my cap/gown/ticket pickup (or ordering)?

ANSWER:        Contact the SU Bookstore: Debbie Johnson at dyjohnson@salisbury.edu to make
                       special arrangements.                     

QUESTION:      I lost my cap/gown/tassel/academic emblem.

ANSWER:         Contact the SU Bookstore. On the day of commencement, Bookstore personnel
                        will be available in the Civic Center to assist with such issues.

QUESTION:      Should I wear my hood?

ANSWER:         Your hood should be carried into the arena. Graduates will be hooded by the
                        dean of graduate studies during the ceremony.enter to assist wi

CEREMONY                                                                                                                      

QUESTION:     Where is the Civic Center?

ANSWER:        The Civic Center is located at 500 Glen Avenue, Salisbury, MD 21804.

QUESTION:     What time do graduates have to be at the Civic Center?

ANSWER:        Graduates should report no later than 5:00 PM for the 6:00 PM ceremony. Be
                       prepared to remain in the Civic Center once you enter. Do not bring personal
                       belongings. Air horns, balloons and banners are not permitted.

QUESTION:     When will the ceremony finish?

ANSWER:        Our graduation ceremony lasts approximately two hours.

QUESTION:    I have guests who can't make it that day.  Are there options for them?

ANSWER:       SU's Commencement ceremonies will be webcast so that family and friends may
                      enjoy the celebration, even if they cannot attend the ceremony.  On
                      Commencement Day, look for the link on SU's home page.  The link will be
                      activated just before each ceremony begins. 

QUESTION:     Can I videotape the ceremony?

ANSWER:        Guests may videotape or photograph the ceremony from their seats only.

QUESTION:     Is there a reception after commencement?

ANSWER:        Yes. All graduates and guests are invited to attend a reception in the Midway
                       Room, immediately following the ceremony.

QUESTION:    How is the student commencement speaker selected?

ANSWER:       Students are eligible to apply if they have a GPA of 3.75 or above. Members of the
                     Commencement Committee review and select a graduate commencement speaker
                     based on speech submissions.

QUESTION:     How can I order pictures?

ANSWER:        Grad Images (www.gradimages.com; 800-261-2576) will send ordering
                       information to each graduate at the home address soon after graduation with a
                       proof and instructions on ordering. Grad Images takes photos of the graduates
                       as they are receiving their diplomas.  

QUESTION:     I applied for graduation but I don’t know if I am eligible or have met all
                      of the requirements.

ANSWER:        Information about eligibility to graduate or honors is obtained from the Registrar’s
                      office at registrar@salisbury.edu.
