The Department of Chemistry offers a broad selection of
programs for students seeking careers in chemistry and related
professions. As you begin your undergraduate studies in
chemistry it is important that you understand the requirements
of the major "in general" and the specific differences between
the chemistry programs.
You will be required to complete a minimum of 120
credits for graduation with a Bachelor of Science in
chemistry. You must have at least a "C" average in the
chemistry core courses required for the major. To stay
on track for graduation you should consult regularly
with your advisor when developing your individual
program plans and selecting courses. It is critical that
you realize that many of the required courses for the
chemistry major follow a "lock-step" offering. You must
finish certain prerequisites in the appropriate semester
or you may have to wait out a semester or year before
being able to take the upper level course. Some of the
upper level courses are only offered one semester per
academic year. If you are not on track with the
recommended sequence it may mean an additional
semester(s) to complete the requirements. Please take
advantage of the expertise and experience of your
chemistry advisor in selecting appropriate courses.
The broad selection of programs within the chemistry
major allow you to choose an academic avenue which best
suits your interests and career goals. The core courses
you take during your first two years will be quite
similar for all the chemistry programs but you should be
considering which track/program you wish to follow as
you progress in the major. The Department of Chemistry
has six designated programs: chemistry ACS-certified
chemistry biochemistry pre-engineering chemistry/teacher
certification and chemistry for health-related
professionals. The basic differences in these programs
and why you might choose a particular program will be
reviewed. For a more detailed look at the curriculum and
requirements for each program please consult the SU
Undergraduate Catalogue
or meet with your chemistry advisor.
