For My Career Planning Class-Question?

Have you started your job search or graduate school search?  What many resources are saying is that with the economy the way it is, graduating students should begin their job/graduate school search at least 6 months prior to graduation.

If your answer to the question is yes, tell us why you started your job/grad school search now and if your answer is no, tell us why you have not started the search sooner.

Don't forget to sign your name and do not say anything you would not want others to see.

I began my search for graduate school about the middle of last semester because I knew that deadlines would be approaching soon if I wanted to be accepted in the spring semester. What I want to go to graduate school for is pretty specific and not many Maryland schools offer it so it was easy to limit my search down. I am interested in Experimental Psychology and that is why I have applied to one school and am waiting to hear back for a response about acceptance. I think that the earlier you get started the better, and that is why I started so soon because I knew I wanted to go to graduate school since I started my undergraduate studies. I will have to work while in graduate school to be able to pay for it, and also wanted to have a backup plan in case graduate school does not work out, so that is why I took this career class. I did not know how to begin job searching or what my options were. I did not begin my job search until this semester and my first step was the Job Fair. I am very fortunate to have found a job, and don't really know how I would have gone about it differently to have started sooner. I think that it was hard for me to start sooner than this semester because I didn't know what I wanted to do and felt that all the emails and notifications I received about job offers were places looking for students graduating in May. I think I should have started sooner, but needed for guidance and that is where I should have used our school facilities more. I think it was tough to realize that I am graduating and needed to do job searches sooner, but at the same time I think that I started at a good time. I would encourage others to think about it sooner than I did, but I think that the last semester is when I can tell businesses that I am graduating and available to work. Instead of I am not available yet, but will be graduating in a year. Overall, I think deadlines are very important and should be paid attention to, making that the basis of how much time you think you need personally to begin your graduate school and job search process.

I have yet to begin my search for graduate school or for a job following graduation. One reason i have not started searching for schools or jobs is because i am still not sure about what i want to do. I will not graduate for another year and i am very busy as it is now. Also, i am about to begin my search for an internship next fall so i can graduate december 2009. I am also busy with working and playing soccer with the college. i will certainly begin my search for graduate school or a real job soon.

I have begun to search for jobs by networking through my family and friends. I dont graduate until may so it is a little early to had out my resume to companys right now. Some companys that Iam really considering are Medda Mune, which is a medicine company and aero tek. I will be more agressive in my job search in the spring.

I began my job search the beginning of this semester. Due to the many reports on the news stating how the economy is declining and how thousands of jobs are being cut every day, I was concerned that as a senior graduating in December, I would not be able to find many opportunities as the year progressed. I have heard from many friends and family members that it is always best to apply as soon as possible to as many job opportunities that you can qualify for, as you may increase your chances of finding a job. By using the school resources such as the eRecruiting website, I have been able to arrange for five job interviews on campus or at another location near the school. I have also talked with Career Service advisors and had my resume looked over to get recommendations about how to approach different employers. As a Psychology major, it may be more difficult to find job opportunities than other majors. Since I am not fully confident in what my future career will be, I am not going to go immediately to graduate school and want to work at a full-time job until I am fully confident enough to apply to graduate schools. I have been mentoring at an elementary school and want to see different fields where a Psychology major would be relevant to use. I am hopeful that after learning different strategies from this class and gaining more experience with different job settings, I will be more confident in knowing where to apply and what field to be interested in for graduate school.

I have just begun my search for a summer internship. I just finished updating my resume, and have sent it out to two potential employers. I have started now because I heard that employers start selecting applicants in November. I hope to have my first real job lined up by this time next year. I would also like to attend Grad School and have started preparing for the GMATs but to get into school for an MBA I need to have work experience.

I began my career search over the summer. I found a position that I liked, however I could not go fulltime in december there. I used that position as a stepping stone and networking tool to find my next position. I ended up taking an internship in Salisbury that will ultimately lead to a fulltime position. Personally, you should always search for new careers that you may be interested in, even if you already have a good position.

After the fall semester last year I decided that I wanted to attend graduate school for school psychology. Therefore, I started looking at schools and took a GRE prep class. Little did I know that the economy was going to take a nose dive so I have decided to hold off on grad school and focus on getting a job. I started looking for jobs in September and I am in the process of preparing my federal resume. I have a secure job back home at a family restaurant, but I would prefer to not be there for the rest of my life. I also plan on looking in the classifieds as much as possible. I have accepted the fact that I am not going to make a lot of money in the next 5 years, but job security is much more important.

My dad recently offered me a job at his company but before that I did not begin searching for a job. The main reason I didn't start going on a job search is because I wasn't completely sure what I wanted to due after graduation. What kind of job I was looking for as well as whether I wanted to go to graduate school were all things I was trying to figure out before I started searching for a job. If I was to be currently on a job search I would probably start by networking through family, friends, and past employers. I've heard a million time that "it's not what you know. It's who you know."

I have not begun my job or graduate school search yet. For one thing I am not completely sure what I want to do, so I don't think I should seriously look for a career without a plan or atleast an idea of what I want to do, because I don't want to rush into anything and then realize that it's not what I want at all. I am a junior and still have a little over a year before I will be graduating so I feel it's a little early to begin the search, however I know that I should really start thinking about it because with the economy declining like it is, earlier is definately better.

I have not begun my job search yet because I will not be graduating until May 2010. Another reason I have not begun a job search is because I plan to go to graduate school. However, I have started looking into where I want to go for graduate school. So far the schools that have programs that I think would be the best for me are Boston University or Mississippi State University. I plan on looking into these schools more over the upcoming Spring semester and visiting them over the summer. I have also been thinking about an internship for Summer 2009. I have been talking to my advisor about this and it seems like it will come together and work out.

I have used this class to aid me with my job search. I have taken this semester to consider where I want to work and in what industry. The class has introduced me to possible employers that I had not even realized existed and this has been very helpful. Navigating the online system that Salisbury has set up has also been somewhat helpful. However I am looking to return to NY so I have had to use a variety of outside job search engines. It would be nice if Salisbury could work on establishing more national connections. As for grad school, it's on the back burner because I would like to find a career that interests me before getting any more specialized education. This way my work may even pay for some or all of my educational expenses. My parents paid for my undergrad education so to avoid massive loans with no income I will also need to work for a bit even if my employer will not pay for my graduate degree.

I have only slightly began my job search considering graduate school is a requirement for my job aspirations. My dream job is to be a high school psychology/history teacher and in the majority of states you are required to have a masters within ten years of teaching. I have heard numerous times how difficult it is to go back to school once you have quit so I know now is the time. I have done numerous hours of research into what graduate school I feel would be my best fit. I have talked to many teachers about letters of recommendations and have already applied to my first choice schools. Many schools do not have a deadline until March, so I have pretty far ahead in that aspect. However, I have also put into consideration what would happen if I was not accepted for any reason to the schools I have chosen. I have looked at numerous websites for state teaching licenses. I would still be able to apply at a number of high schools considering the teaching field is still a needy job. I hope this remains this way considering I won't enter the teaching world for at least one more year! So as of right now I feel I am right on track with job searching before my upcoming graduation.

I have not started my search. I still have one more full year of school after this year. I also have a great job working at a bank where after graduation I can begin a manager in training program and hopefully become a manager at a branch after the 6 month training program is over. I do want to learn how to use the resources at SU jsut in case this job some how doesn't work out.

I got a late start on my search for graduate studies and or jobs. My best resources were the people i know including teachers, friends, and my boss. There are a few helpful websites i looked at to find jobs in the area, and a range of income i could be expecting. I applied for grad school at Salisbury and am waiting to hear back. I should be accepted, at least i think i should be from the people i talked to that are already in. My grades and experience compare well to theirs. If i do not get in the program i will have to accelerate a job search.

I have not yet started my job or graduate school search. With the changing curriculum here at Salisbury I will still need several more semesters to complete my undergrad degree. I don't think it makes much sense to begin my search until i am a little bit closer to getting my degree.

I have just begun my job search for when I graduate. I thought I wanted to grad school but have recently changed my mind. I would like to get a job using my degree. I've started researching the kind of job I would like to get and seeing who is hiring. I've used some of my alumni friends to see how they like their current/past jobs and to see if the company they work for is hiring. I've also started to do online searches for job openinngs.

I have been searching for grad schools since this summer. As I will be graduating soon,I have looked at a number of schools and as well as potential jobs. I have talked to a number of teachers and mostly gone online for grad programs. I believe it is very impostant to plan things out ahead of time and that is why I started this summer. Cloe

I have yet to really begin my careers search. I am graduating in December and plan on living in Salisbury until may. Throughout the following month after my graduation I will being using E-recruting, other job websites, and my personal network to find a job. I am not too worried about it at the moment because I have a job now that will get me by as I enter my job search, also I am excited because I may get the opportunity to move somewhere new with my upcoming career opportunities.

I have started my job search as I will be graduating in May. I used a lot of networking to get my resume out to various places. However, I am still unsure of where I would like to be employed. I was looking into the federal government because of the benefits and job security. I have connections in the U.S. Census Bureau and at NAVAIR. I have also talked to my supervisor at my internship and she said I could continue my internship in sales and marketing if I wanted, but it will remain unpaid. I started my search now because I know that starting the search ealry would give me the best opportunity to land a job. Also, with the economy the way it is right now more jobs are being cut everyday so the opportunities are few and far between.

I have started my job search as I will be graduating in May. I used a lot of networking to get my resume out to potential employers. I am not entirely sure of what I want to do yet, so my search has been narrow. I was thinking about working for the federal government because of the strong benefits and job security. I'm also aware that they are one of the few places that are hiring for a lot of positions during these tough economic times. I have connections at the U.S. Census Bureau and NAVAIR which would fit my desire to work for the government. My supervisor at my internship also told me that I could continue my internship in sales and marketing, but it would remain unpaid. I started my search early because the earlier you start the better opportunity you have. Also, the economy is rough right now so jobs are few and far between. Getting a head start is a smart idea if you want to land a job.

I have begun my job search. I have started it because I graduate in a month. It has been a difficult process so far because of the econonmy. I have used mostly networks to try and get my foot in the door so far, but have had little success. I feel that the best chance I have to find a job is networking. I have also used career services and have also had little success. I am postive and hopefully i will find a job before or shortly after graduation.

No I haven't started looking for a job 6 months prior to graduation. I wanted to wait another year or so to get a "real" job and work in ocean city another summer. I figured I had my whole life to work, and I just wanted to relax and have a fun summer, but make some money as well. I already had a job lined up in Ocean City, so it worked out perfectly.

The process entails realizing that typical MBA thinking is not an ultimate truth but just one way of interpreting business reality and operating in the marketplace. You will need to coach yourself in alternative concepts and tool up accordingly. Soon you will discover that your view has broadened and you managerial capabilities will have improved dramatically.
