Territory Manager
■ Employer-Bausch & Lomb
■ Major-Physical Education
■ Minor-Business Administration
■ Year of Graduation-2000 |
1. Provide a few sentences
about your career and any advice that may help them.
--The goal of a pharmaceutical sales representative is to influence a
physician*s prescribing habits. The key to being successful is being
able to paint a picture to the physician as to why your product is a
better choice then the competition. It is also key to demonstrate to the
physician what benefits your medication can offer the physician and
their patient.
2. Offer any career-related suggestions to better prepare them for a
career in your industry.
--Getting into pharmaceutical sales straight from college can be
difficult. Most companies want their representatives to have previous
sales experience. With this in mind, you have two ways to go, find a
company that will hire an employee straight out of college or get 2 or
so years of business to business sales experience. If you do go the
route of another sales job first, save anything that the company sends
out with your name on it as far as recognition or rankings.
Pharmaceutical companies want to see documentation of your past results.

Ms. Jennifer Malas |
■ Title-Program
Director
■ Employer-Abilities Network
■ Major-Social Work
■ Minor-Spanish
■ Year of Graduation-1998 |
1. I work in the field of
Social Services, helping people with developmental disabilities. We help
support people in their own communities and help them work on the goals
they want to achieve. My advice would be to not be afraid of people with
disabilities. They are people just like anyone else, and can be many
other things before they are their disability. We work with mothers,
daughters, sons, public speakers, hard workers, public transportation
experts - really cool people - before they are defined as their
disability.
2. To help you prepare for this field - understand that everybody is an
individual, and want to be treated as such. Don't group people together
based on your assumptions about them, but take the time to get to know
them individually. Try new things and meet new people. |

■ Title-Elementary
School Teacher
■ Employer-Carroll County Public Schools, Maryland
■ Major-Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education
■ Year of Graduation-2002 |
| The advice I would offer is to
personally visit any school that you would like to be hired at to drop
off your resume. When applying to school systems be sure to contact the
Human Resources Dept to be sure they have received your applications and
have placed you in the pool of applicants. Wait until you have become a
teacher to obtain your masters most school systems pay a significant
portion of the costs, and Carroll County will pay for 100% the costs at
McDaniel College...you just have to pay for your 10 dollar parking pass.
Gain as many experiences as possible when observing and student
teaching. Go to the SU job fair...I was hired on the spot and started
two days after graduation. :) |

■ Title-6th
grade English/Reading Teacher
■ Employer-Montgomery County Public Schools
■ Major-Elementary Education
■ Minor-English
■ Year of Graduation-2002
■ Graduate School Major-I am currently studying
Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Leadership at McDaniel
College. |
1. Provide a few sentences
about your career and any advice that may help students.
I am currently a sixth grade English and Reading teacher in Montgomery
County. My advice for anyone interested in education is to understand
the policies of the district they are interested to work for. Also, get
the most out of your student teaching, learn what you can from your
mentor teachers. Lastly, know that your first year isn't going to be all
roses. You have to be ready for curveballs and be ok if your "perfect"
lesson doesn't go exactly right, just learn from it and move on.
2. Offer any career-related suggestions to better prepare students for a
career in your industry.
My suggestions is to find summer jobs that work with kids especially if
you aren't sure what age group to work. Summer camps are a great summer
job to work with kids and plan mini-activities (similar to lessons). I
also worked for a Montessori school/daycare. It gave me opportunities to
plan curriculum and lessons, and again experiment with the age group I
wanted to work with. Lastly, substituting can give you an advantage. Use
the days you don't have classes to sub for Wicomico County. If you don't
have those days off, see if you can tutor (volunteer or paid). All of
these different options give you opportunities to work with kids and
look great on your resume.

■ Title-Doctoral
Student in Mathematics Education
■ Employer-University of Virginia
■ Major-Mathematics with a concentration in
Education
■ Year of Graduation-SU-2001
■ Graduate School Major-Masters of Science:
Mathematics (2005); Doctorate: Mathematics Education (2008/2009) |
1. Provide a few
sentences about your career and any advice that may help students.
Currently I am a 2nd year doctoral student in Mathematics Education.
However, my masters is in pure mathematics. I’m aiming to obtain a
mathematics education position within a mathematics department in hopes
to teach lower level mathematics courses as well as math method courses.
As a masters student in mathematics, I was required to teach at least
one section of Calculus I and II as well as take up to three graduate
mathematics courses each semester. To receive my degree, I needed to
pass a preliminary examination, write and present a masters
presentation, or write and present a masters thesis. I choose to do the
latter in order to get original research experience.
In my first year as a doctoral student in mathematics education, I took
four classes and assisted in teaching a course each semester. Primarily
I must take math research method courses as well as general qualitative
and quantitative type research courses. I also can fulfill electives by
taking either mathematics or education graduate courses.
As a second year, I will be taking 7 courses throughout the year and
supervising student teachers.
During the summer, we are encouraged to create and carry out research
projects, as well as present novel mathematics lessons at conferences
such as NCTM.
Advice: Earning a masters in mathematics education or a masters in
mathematics can lead you to a doctorate in mathematics education.
However, as a doctoral student, you will be either supplementing your
degree with upper level mathematics courses or educational courses
respectively. Before applying to a specific university, you should
discuss the courses, which you will need to fulfill the requirement.
Furthermore, when applying for a position after receiving your degree,
depending on the university, you might be required to spend more time in
the education aspect or the mathematics aspect. You should ponder these
features while deciding to obtain your degree so you will have the
experience needed for the wanted position.
2. Offer any career-related suggestions to better prepare students
for a career in your industry.
Some teaching experience in the high school setting is a major advantage
prior to working toward your degree. It allows one to have an arsenal of
creative ideas and understandings of the classroom, which will provide a
better foundation for presentation and dissertation areas.
Technology is a prominent topic within mathematics education. The more
one learns about activities that can be done using SMART board,
Geometer’s Sketch Pad, TI-83, and EXCEL, the more prepared one will be
to use those tools to succeed in teaching other mathematics teachers as
well as using them to supplement your research. |
