We, The Selective Liberal Arts Consortium (colleges/universities listed at bottom of this page), are currently offering 2010 Employer Site Visits to consortium students.  These site visits give you the opportunity to actually go to the employers place of business and view their location.  Also, you get to meet and network with people who can help you with your career pursuits.
There is a complete description of each event below and a link to register for that visit after the description.  Also within the site visit description is a contact name for more information.

Notes for Visit:
In order to get the most out of your shadowing experience we recommend the following:

1.Research the organization's web site and find out as much as possible about the organization prior to visiting it.
2. Double check directions and make sure you know where to go and where to park. Plan on arriving 15-20 minutes early.
3. Dress business casual. No need for a suit, but no jeans , t-shirts or sneakers either.
4. Bring a padfolio with copies of your resume and bring paper and pens. (You will want to take notes, get business cards and share your resume with folks!) Always remember to send thank you notes.
5. Good luck! You are representing your university-act professional.
6. If, for some reason, you are unable to attend your site visit, please give 48 hours notice to your university and the person coordinating your site visit. We have a waiting list for some visits and if you can't go we want others to be able to.

Founded in 1982, Search for Common Ground works to transform the way the world deals with conflict - away from adversarial approaches and towards collaborative problem solving. 695 to exit Interstate 83 North toward York, Pennsylvania (approximately 5 miles). Take exit 20A Shawan Road, stay in far right lane to bear right at traffic light onto McCormick Road. McCormick & Co. is a global leader in the manufacture, marketing and distribution of spices, herbs, seasonings, speciality foods, and flavors to the entire food industry. Comments:
McCormick and Co. has multiple locations but this visit will occur at 226 Schilling Circle, in the McCormick Learning and Development Center. We will not be visiting the manufacturing plant but a series of speakers will present on opportunities for new college graduates. Paid internship will also be discussed, particularly for summer 2010. McCormick is interested in students with all majors but particularly interested in the following majors: Business, Finance, Accounting, IT, Marketing, Supply Chain, Human Resources, and anyone with foreign language ability, particularly Chinese. Devereux is a non-profit organization providing services around the nation for persons with emotional, developmental & educational disabilities. This visit will provide an overview of various paths of graduate study and of the work that occurs at organizations such as Devereux through a panel presentation with various mental health professionals. Details will be provided about Devereux’s full-time year-long psychology traineeship program for 2010 graduates considering future graduate study in psychology or behavioral health. Program information and application details are provided on the website. Traineeship applications are accepted between December 15 and February 1.

The Choice Program, a signature program of The Shriver Center, is a nationally recognized initiative that serves youth in Maryland's juvenile justice system. The Choice Program intervention focuses on a community-based, family-centered case management approach to delinquency prevention and youth development. Choice Fellows serve for one year as a part of AmeriCorps. Living stipend and additional benefits provided.

Comments:
Students will begin their day at 1pm at our main office on UMBC's campus where they will get a chance to meet and greet some of our staff members and take a tour of our main office/Shriver Center. We will also host an information session at the main office to provide students with more in depth information about The Choice Program and The Shriver Center.

After the information session, the students will be provided directions to go to one of our 3 field offices in either Baltimore City or Baltimore County to meet with our field staff. At the field offices, students will get an opportunity to sit in an office daily 'run down', where the teams get together to discuss our clients; to go over successes, challenges and figure out ways to help serve our clients.

After the run down, the students will then go out shadowing one of our current fellows for a few hours in the communities that we serve. The shadow experience will include home visits, community visits and some other events that might be occurring on that day.

Students will be given an opportunity to evaluate and reflect on their experience via a 'take home' feedback form.

Site Description/Schedule:
Community Mediation Maryland is a social justice non-profit organization that seeks to provide free mediation to everyone in Maryland. Mediation is a voluntary process in which a mediator helps people from their community find win-win solutions to their conflict (e.g., neighborhood disputes, family disputes). The process is implemented by volunteers who are professionally trained and are recruited to represent the diversity of the neighborhood they serve. The community mediators guide the participants through a process that helps them to first identify their issues and then generate their own solutions. Centers throughout Maryland offer free or sliding scale mediation services to local community members. Agenda includes group activities, a mock mediation, overview of AmeriCorps, staff panel, and lunch. CMM recruits several AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers each year and places them throughout Maryland. The training received is excellent preparation for law school or public service careers.
