2013 Summer Scholars Program

Monday, May 20 – Thursday, August 1, 2013

The Summer Scholars Program is a competitive summer research internship to work with an Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) faculty member for 11 weeks on one of their current research projects. Although this program is offered by the EVMS Department of Pediatrics at CHKD, previous experience in Pediatrics is not required for any of our projects.

Our three basic areas of research include:

1. Pre-Clinical/Laboratory Research – These projects are offered by medical school faculty members, and require prior laboratory experience and knowledge of basic laboratory procedures. Many of these projects will also require additional training (provided by the program) for working with animal tissue. These projects will only be offered to EVMS students or other local undergraduate or graduate students who are available for an in-person interview at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

2. Clinical Medicine Research – These projects are offered by hospital physicians and could involve chart review or patient/parent interviews in topics such as childhood obesity, autism, allergies, child psychiatry, and other child health related fields.

3. Applied Psychology and Public Health Research – Projects in these two categories are offered by hospital physicians or faculty members in our Division of Community Health and Research. These projects could involve chart review, patient/parent interviews, behavior observation, or educational program development in topics such as autism, environmental hazards, disease prevention, health policy, or wellness promotion.

Students who are eligible for this program - (1) Undergraduates - students entering their senior undergraduate year for the fall 2013 term, or students graduating from their senior year before May 20, 2013. (2) Graduate or Medical Students - students entering their first or second year of graduate or medical school for the fall 2013 term. (3) Other - Students who have completed their senior undergraduate year and are preparing to apply to graduate or medical school in the near future.

Time Commitment – PLEASE NOTE: Students must be available full-time (at least 40 hours per week) for the entire program. There are usually no program obligations during weekends.

Housing – Out-of-town students are responsible for finding their own housing, although the Summer Scholars Program will provide rental leads from EVMS medical students who are willing to lease or share their apartments during the program session. Most of these rentals are within walking distance of our medical campus.

Stipend – Students will receive a $3,000 stipend, paid at orientation!

In addition to your research project, students will - (1) participate in a one-week didactic series on various aspects of conducting and presenting research, (2) shadow pediatricians and specialists at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (optional), (3) give an oral research presentation under the guidance of your mentor, and (4) present research outcomes with a poster presentation at the closing reception
