The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is excited to offer students the opportunity to fulfill internship requirements and gain valuable work experience at Rocks, Susquehanna, and Palmer State Parks (Harford County).   We are looking for motivated students and individuals with diverse backgrounds to assist in a variety of unpaid internships.  This program offers the opportunity to build your résumé with rewarding experiences in the field.   The opportunities include:

Interpretation (Naturalist)- Assist Ranger staff in developing and leading interpretive programs, staffing visitor centers, scheduling speakers, creating displays and exhibits, performing office work and other interpretive duties.   Individuals will have the opportunity to work with park visitors, school and scout groups, and community programs developing a wide-range of interpretive skills while gaining meaningful experiences.   Weekday and weekend work required. 

Interpretation (Historian)- Assist Ranger staff in developing and leading historic interpretive programs, staffing Rock Run Historic Area’s Carter-Archer Mansion, Grist Mill, and Tollhouse, leading tours, conducting research, scheduling speakers, creating displays and exhibits, performing office work and other interpretive duties.   Individuals will have the opportunity to work with park visitors, school and scout groups, and community programs developing a wide-range of interpretive skills while gaining meaningful experiences.   Weekday and weekend work required. 

Volunteer Management- Assist park staff in the management of the park’s volunteers.  Intern will be responsible for recruiting new volunteers, retaining existing volunteers, and providing relevant meaningful opportunities.  Assisting the Volunteer Coordinator with maintaining records is also expected, including the upkeep of an online database listing current volunteer opportunities.  Intern will coordinate volunteer events and projects with staff, and should be willing to lead group work days.   Weekday and weekend work required. 

Park Office Administration- Intern will communicate with visitors, employees, and other individuals to answer questions, provide or explain information, and address complaints.  Will answer telephones, direct calls and take messages.  Will compile, copy, sort, and file records of office activities, business transactions, and other activities.  Intern will operate office machines, such as photocopiers and scanners, facsimile machines, voice mail systems and personal computers. Intern will deliver messages and inventory and order materials, supplies, and services.  Weekday and weekend work required. 

Concession Management- Intern will work with Ranger staff to develop, implement, maintain, and improve small park concession.  Intern will assist in management of inventory, sales procedures, merchandising, and store operations.   Weekday and weekend work required.  

IT/Media Management- Intern will work to enhance the park’s online webpage and social media feeds. In addition, there is an opportunity to assist the department in searching the department’s site and addressing broken links and additional updates. The majority of this research could be done from home, with on site visits for reporting work status and presenting the final report. The student must have experience in communications and IT systems.

Natural Resource/Trail Management‐ Assist Ranger staff with natural resource management.  Work will include developing and implementing invasive species removal plans, boundary marking, trail maintenance & improvement, trail design & planning, RTE species considerations, wildlife monitoring, forest stand & wetland management, critical area issues, reforestation of agricultural land.  Identify and map areas of concern, organize and implement volunteer crews to work on those areas.  Applicants should have a basic understanding of ecology and native vs. invasive species, and should be capable of physical labor involving hand tools, power tools, and other equipment.  

Grant Researcher/Writer- Intern will work with staff to identify funding sources and develop, author, and submit grant proposals.  Research can be done from anywhere in Maryland.   Position will require 1‐2 meetings on site.  Intern will develop a list of alternative funding sources for new projects and programs within the Department and at the site. Also, intern will assist with the managing current open grants.  Opportunities for grant proposals include educational programs, trail development, maintenance projects, historic restoration, interpretive signage, and other needs. 

Foreign Language (Spanish) Specialist- Intern will have the opportunity to assist with several projects which will improve staff-to-visitor communications.  Intern will be assigned to a project based on the intern’s interests and area of academic concentration.  Projects available include the translation of park informational hand-outs, wayside exhibits, and other park signage; the presentation of a class to familiarize park staffs with the uniqueness of Hispanic culture; the creation of a Spanish audio announcement that communicates pertinent information; a basic Spanish class to be taught to park volunteers and staff; and a park study where the student evaluates the effectiveness of current park communications for both English and Spanish speaking visitors.  The intern’s projects will span across many state park and forest operational areas such as day-use operations, campground operations, interpretation, maintenance, concessions, and event planning. 

Park Ranger/Operations- Intern will assist with park operations, information, education, interpretation, resource management, and visitor services in support of the management of natural, cultural, historical and recreational resources for the benefit of the public. This position contributes to the staffing needs of the State Park Service at Rocks, Susquehanna, and Palmer State Park. Other duties associated with the position will include administrative duties such as answering information requests from the public or media received through internet, mail, or telephone.  The intern will have the opportunity to experience all levels of work within the state park including but not limited to interpretation, maintenance, concessions, event planning, volunteer coordination and all other duties assigned.   

Fitness Program Management- Intern will promote health and sports through park patron involvement in various ways.  Intern will run sport competitions and will provide activities to promote health and fitness, using appropriate techniques for various skill levels of all visitors.   Intern will have the opportunity to work with youth and adults, and will provide fitness programs in a natural setting including but not limited to the following:  outdoor yoga, hiking, biking or walking tours, group runs, team building exercises, pick-up games, and other activities.  Intern will research grants for a Frisbee golf course and low-ropes course.  

These positions are available throughout the year and are unpaid but occasionally may lead to paid positions.  Students are expected to work at least 50 hours over the course of the internship and work hours for most positions are flexible. Internships are also available in semester blocks.  On the job training is available for most areas; experience is not necessary.  The above listed positions and their duties can be merged, re-written, and tailored to meet your needs.  Students are also encouraged to suggest internships not listed above.
