Description: The Smithsonian Associates advances the Institution's mission "to increase and diffuse knowledge" through life-enriching educational and cultural experiences inspired by the Smithsonian's research and collections for DC-region students, families, and adults, and for learning communities nationwide. Intern Duties: •Coordinate monthly press mailings •Maintain schedule of calendar submissions to local media •Fulfill press requests •Contact media to relay program information •Compile publicity reports detailing media coverage •Update and maintain media lists •Research additional media outlets and organizational contacts via Internet •Draft press releases and public service announcements • Assist with social media outreach •Some general office duties including fax and copies •Writing media material to a professional draft level • Interacting with members of the press • Social media account management• Media list building with public relations software, Cision• Pitching to media• Preparing publicity reports Qualifications:      •Education/background in marketing, communications, public relations, or related field.•Professional demeanor, interpersonal communication and organizational skills are highly valued.• Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, Internet research, and social media websites, including Twitter and Facebook.

How to Apply: You may apply online at http://intern.si.edu/ and then clicking on the words Smithsonian Online Academic Appointment System (SOLAA).  You will need to answer all questions and attached a resume and writing sample and most recent transcripts.  Those writing your letters of recommendation (We need two letters of recommendation.) will enter those letters themselves or you may do so for them if you have the letters of recommendation.  If whoever is writing the recommendations has trouble with SOLAA, they may send the recommendations to me by email (TSAInternships@si.edu).  Please use the Help function if you need assistance with SOLAA; SI staff members WILL respond promptly to you questions.Tips for application success:  Apply early; use standard English; proof your work; request and read the position description for the internship you are seeking before you apply; tailor your resume to the position being applied for; enter into SOLAA the names and email addresses of those two individuals who will write recommendations for you and then hit the Send button so they are notified; ensure all application materials are entered into SOLAA prior to hitting the Submit button.  A complete application consists of the application form, resume, writing sample, most recent transcripts, and two letters of recommendation.  If you have any questions, please write to TSAInternships@si.edu.TSA offers internships in the winter-spring, summer, and fall. There are no application deadlines, but early submission is encouraged.
