ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ALUMNI

Being an Alumni Resource/Mentor is a chance for you to offer support and guidance to students or other alumni. You may be surprised at what you have to offer and how your feedback or information can motivate or educate others. There is no set of expectations for what you will cover with students as each individual will define their own goals. Student feedback shows that those alumni who provide guidance, helpful information, and are comfortable sharing their own career journey, are most appreciated by students. Every alumnus approaches the process differently but here are some helpful hints to get you started.

Find out a little about each student . This will allow you to focus your answers around their needs so it is more beneficial to you and the student. Questions may include:
►what are you hoping to gain from our interaction?
►what is your are of study or emphasis?
►why are you pursuing your MBA?
►when are you planning to graduate?
►what are your initial plans after graduation?
Give advice. Be available and willing to give advice or guidance. Students who are nervous about making contact with you may appear undirected. Find out what their need is and provide appropriate information.
Be willing to tell what you know. Students are usually hungry for any information or insight you can offer regarding your industry, company, job function or past experiences. Expect to be the “expert” in the relationship or, if needed, possibly offer to help find appropriate resources.
Be Responsive. If you are unable to meet with a student, take the time to respond and let them know you are not available. If you would like to provide feedback on the program, contact SU Career Services at careerservices@salisbury.edu or call 410-543-6075/1-888-543-0148.
Be Flexible. If your schedule allows, you can meet for coffee, talk on the phone or even respond via emails to the student.
