Mathematics Interview Questions

Below are sample interview questions for your field. In preparing for your interview, you should also review typical mathinterview questions asked of all majors, thoroughly research the organization, dress professionally, and visit the interviewing skills section of the SU Career Center’s website. Below are sample Mathematics interview questions.

-Other than textbooks, what math books/journals have you read in the last year?
-Who is your favorite mathematician? Why?
-How would you figure out the number of mosquitos/gas stations/grains of sand/etc. in the world?
-Share your experience and comfort level with programs/applications (i.e., SAS, Excel, etc.)
-Tell me something about yourself that is not listed on your resume.
-What is the riskiest thing you’ve ever done?
-Are you more risk-averse or risk-seeking?  Give me an example.
-What is your greatest weakness?
-How do you feel about waking up early or staying up late?
-What are your interests outside the classroom/office?
-Why should we hire you?
-What is your favorite class that you took?
-Who has personally influenced you the most?  Name someone whom you’ve never met who’s been a strong influence.
-Tell me about your biggest failure or a period of adversity.
-Discuss a difficult ethical decision you recently faced.
-What’s the last book you read?

-Describe a sample lesson plan that guides your teaching.
-How have you planned a semester to determine the amount of content you will cover?
-Which teaching methods have you found to work well when teaching _____________ to students this age?
-Describe a classroom where you have worked. What routines and procedures did you use to keep the class organized?
-Describe a classroom management plan that you have used in the past. What were the rules and what consequences worked? Were there positive rewards?
-Tell about a grading system you used for a nine-week period.
-How have you worked with parents?
-How have you worked with all students, especially those who ___________?
-How have you worked to be an advocate for students who are at-risk in your school?
-How have you used student data to inform planning or assessment?
-With so much content to cover with standards, describe your approach to long-term planning.
