Non-Profit Employers

Nonprofit organizations are what their names imply. Their goal is not to make a profit at the end of the year; the goal is to provide a service to society for the greater good. The Visiting Nurses Association is a nonprofit. McDonald's is not. Learning To Give is a web site that has allot to say about the nonprofit sector.

Below are nonprofit employers that typically have jobs and career opportunities in the nonprofit arena. 

The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) Job and volunteering opportunities.  AFSC carries out service, development, social justice, and peace programs throughout the world. Founded by Quakers in 1917 to provide conscientious objectors with an opportunity to aid civilian war victims, AFSC's work attracts the support and partnership of people of many races, religions, and cultures.
Americorps - a network of national service programs that engage more than 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve through more than 2,100 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations. They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters. Created in 1993.
Amnesty International
Amigos de las Américas is an international, nonprofit organization that was founded in 1965 and has 40 years of experience in facilitating community development programs. We train and provide opportunities for high school and college students to participate in service projects in Latin America. We are dedicated to building partnerships to empower young leaders, advance community development, and strengthen multicultural understanding in the Americas. AMIGOS believes in the power and capability of young people to change our world!
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
Catholic Network of Volunteer Services-Connecting volunteers with Christian organizational partners.  The local Chapter is in Takoma Park, MD.  Call 1-800-543-5046.
Carnegie Corporation of New York
Center for Interim Programs  A consulting service that helps young people find meaningful gap year placements. Since inception in 1980 as the first organization of its kind in the US, Interim has designed creative gap year opportunities for over 5,000 young people. We have built relationships with organizations worldwide and offer a database of over 5,200 program opportunities.
Charity Channel-this is the world's first, oldest and most effective on-line position recruitment system dedicated exclusively for the nonprofit/NGO sector.

Charity Village-Canada's super site for the nonprofit.  3,000 pages of news, jobs, information.
Chesapeake Bay Foundation-(CBF) fights for strong and effective laws and regulations. CBF also works cooperatively with government, business, and citizens in partnerships to protect and restore the Bay. When necessary, we use legal means to force compliance with existing laws.
Chronicle of Philanthropy-is the newspaper of the nonprofit world.  Click on "Careers".
Community Career Center-an on-line gathering place where not-for-profit employers can meet one another.  Click on "Search Job Opportunities." 
Deep Sweep -The largest selection of non-profit jobs listed in one place for free.
DotOrg Jobs - An employment resource for the nonprofit world. Site includes job listings by site and region, free posting of employment opportunities. They also provide a free monthly Jobs e-mail newsletter.
Earthwatch  -Job and Internship  are posted as they become available in one of Earthwatch Institutes.  An international non-profit organization that brings science to life for people concerned about the Earth's future. 
Energize, Inc.-Jobs and internships involving volunteer management.
EnviroLink-Jobs and Volunteering listed by Topic.  A non-profit organization which has been providing access to thousands of online environmental resources since 1991.
The Foundation Center -The latest data available on U.S. foundation philanthropy. Help grantseekers, grantmakers, researchers, policymakers, the media, and the public better understand the field of philanthropy.
Green Corps- The one-year Green Corps program intersperses intensive classroom instruction with multiple campaign efforts. Trainees gain hands-on experience...At the end of the training, the program facilitates trainees' placement in permanent positions with leading environmental and social change groups.

Inner-City Teacher Corps
Jesuit Volunteer Corps-Men, women and children in the United States are in need of adequate housing, quality education, good jobs, and affordable health insurance. Each year, the Jesuit Volunteer Corps helps to support the service agencies and schools that help people meet those needs by providing Jesuit Volunteers. Right now, JVC is also in need. JVC is looking for talented and dedicated people who have a desire to answer the call to apostolic service and community as Jesuit Volunteers. You can share your gifts and skills with the agencies who serve men, women and children in need as a Jesuit Volunteer.

Lutheran Volunteer Corps. “A year of service. A lifetime of commitment.”
Maryland Conservation Corps-Teach in environmental education,  work in Forest and Parks and partner with local, state and federal agencies.  Be involved in restoration, research and monitoring programs. Earn a bi-weekly salary and upon completion of 1700 hours, a stipend to use toward student loans or future college. Mission:Teach-The goal is to matches teachers, and other support candidates, to the international schools that need their services.

Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) -Look at the opportunities for fresh college graduates!  The state Public Interest Research Groups are an alliance of state-based, citizen-funded organizations that advocate for the public interest.
Scholarly Societies Project-University of Waterloo provides this outstanding site that will link you to a variety of societies and associations by academic disciplines.  they have many job sites associated with them.
