Nonprofit organizations are what their names imply. Their goal is not to make a profit at the end of the year; the goal is to provide a service to society for the greater good. The Visiting Nurses Association is a nonprofit. McDonald's is not. Learning To Give is a web site that has allot to say about the nonprofit sector.

The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) Job and volunteering opportunities.  AFSC carries out service, development, social justice, and peace programs throughout the world. Founded by Quakers in 1917 to provide conscientious objectors with an opportunity to aid civilian war victims, AFSC's work attracts the support and partnership of people of many races, religions, and cultures.
Americorps - a network of national service programs that engage more than 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve through more than 2,100 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations. They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters. Created in 1993.
Amnesty International
Amigos de las Américas is an international, nonprofit organization that was founded in 1965 and has 40 years of experience in facilitating community development programs. We train and provide opportunities for high school and college students to participate in service projects in Latin America. We are dedicated to building partnerships to empower young leaders, advance community development, and strengthen multicultural understanding in the Americas.
