First Year Students
Welcome to SU! As a new student everything seems so fast, but in no
time at all you will be looking at college graduation. You will need to
do many career-related activities to ensure your career success. The
time to begin is NOW.
Career Services
stands ready to help you. Come into our office in GUC 133
anytime.
Here are some learning activities that you must do as a Freshmen to
begin to develop you upcoming career:
- Orientation is
very important during your initial year in college. Career Services
and Academic Advising have worked together to create an interesting
orientation for you.
- Read about the 10 Actions you can take to
decide on a Major.
- Taking a
self assessment and interest test will help narrow the field. Talk to your faculty advisor about
choosing a major and make an
appointment with
the Career Services
Staff.
- Know what majors and
minors are available at SU and
what you can do with a
major/degree in...
- Join
clubs and activities on-campus. This is especially helpful if a
club relates to a specific occupation you may want to pursue.
- Continue your
Volunteer work. It is a great way to gain Career-related
experience.

Work on-campus to earn extra money.
- Think about
studying abroad in the next few semesters.
- Learn what
skills and abilities you must possess when you graduate from
college to be successful. All employers want certain skills
from college graduates. Find out what skills you need, no matter what the major.
- Students often, inadvertently, hurt their future careers.
Dangers lurk-Beware! Know them before it is too late.
Keep yourself cyper-clean.
