Explore Careers and Majors

Once you have conducted some form of self-assessment (through advising, counseling, career assessments, and interest inventories), you will want to bring together all the information you have collected about yourself and move into the next phase of the Career Action Plan: Exploring Careers.

We know you are anxious to begin your job search and start applying for positions but gathering information about your chosen career is an essential step in the overall career development process. Use the resources below to help you determine if a particular career is a good fit for you.

Career Resources/Tools by Major

Wondering what career opportunities there are for your your major? Career Tools/Resources by Major is a all inclusive website of career information that will help you start figuring out what you can do with your major. It includes various tools for you to use that include common career titles, internship and research opportunities, job search websites, interviewing questions for your major, sample resumes and cover letters specific to your field, and relevant professional associations.

What Can I Do with This Major?

Learn about career options related to your major. This tool is from MyPlan and it gives you everything from job titles to salary information. This is a fantastic resource if you don't know what you can do with your major.  It will help you figure out what you can do with your major and what are the next steps.

Traitify

Traitify is an image-based personality assessment that matches you to careers in less than five minutes!  It provides a lot of interesting information about yourself and is a good first step in your career development.  Also it is FUN!

MyPlan

MyPlan offers 4 assessments and they include Career Personality Test (based on Myers-Briggs), Career Interest Inventory (based on Holland's Code), Career Skills Profiler and the Career Values Assessment.

FOCUS 2

A self-paced career guidance tool designed to help you select the right major, clarify your career goals, and provide you with valuable occupation information.

Strong Interest Inventory

The Strong Interest Inventory® assessment is one of the world’s most widely respected and frequently used career planning tools. Statistically compares your pattern of interests to satisfied workers in 122 occupations and highlights majors related to high interests. 
To take Strong, you must speak to a Career Advisor and be given access.  Once you take the inventory it is sent away to be scored and the results are sent back to the Career Advisor typically in a week to 10 days.  You would then need to make an appointment with your Career Advisor to go over the results. Mentor Network Database

Networking with professionals who are working in the fields that interest you is a great way to discover whether a given career is right for you. Whether you're exploring career options, looking for advice about your job/internship search, or hunting for an apartment in a new area, using the Mentor Network is a great way to get started. 

Holland's Codes and SU Majors

This site will provide you with information about Holland's Codes and how they relate to various majors here at SU.  Your Holland Code should be in some way related to your personality.  If it is, you should very much like your major and career.
