Week 1

1. Go over syllabus

2. Click here to view the "Book" for the class.  Next week I hope to have a manual ready.
3. Activity- 1. Cell Phone Activity-5 pts

4. Advertise for help for the Job Fair on Feb. 27th.  I need people who can work at least two hours on that day-anytime from 10 am to 4:30 pm.  The first 10 volunteers will be accepted.  If you help, you do not have to write the two page paper that is required.  Please see me after class and I will register you to work.

The Job Fair Assignment is as follows:
Turn in five business cards from employers (please put arubber band around them with your name)
Write a two-page reaction paper addressing the following:
How did you feel prior to the job fair and why? (ex. nervous, prepared,             excited, etc.)
How did you dress?
What employers did you choose and why?
What was your impression of the recruiters? (ex. did they give you useable information, were they professional, did you feel comfortable, etc.)
Did you find any connections you can use in your job search?
Were there any employers that you did not think would be a possible employer that impressed you?
Do you plan to follow-up and why?
Did this fair help you in your job search?

A representative from The Washington Center (TWC) will be on campus on Wed. Feb. 13. Often they will visit a class for 10-15 min. to explain their internship model and opportunities. For MD students, TWC is quite affordable as state scholarships are offered that include housing. For several years now, SU has not had its fair share of participants compared to other MD schools. TWC facilitates internship placement while offering a rigorous class component to the internship. If you would like your students to learn more about this please let me know and we will schedule it.

Additionally, on Wed. Feb. 13, 4:00 PM - 4:45 PM an Employer Information Session by the Washington Center will be offered for students in the Career Services Office (GUC 133). If you could let your students know of this opportunity I would be grateful.

Extra credit can be earned by attending workshops here at SU.  Go to eRecruiting to register.  Click here to login and view those workshops

(Shows you know someone) “I was excited to receive this job posting from one of your current employees”.
(Make a strong claim) "I am sure that every candidate for your administrative assistant position is claiming to be organized, efficient and highly skilled. I am no different - but as you will see in my attached resume, my experience supports my claims...."
(Question and answer) "What could be the single greatest asset of any sales (or other job title) professional? The ability to understand their clients' needs (or other main screening point) would have to rank pretty high - I know it certainly did in my personal experience..."
But the very best ones are cover letters that show a level of research into the specific company: "After reading several articles about your company, I have become impressed with your core values and how you promote them in the industry. Specifically, I understand your drive to keep local radio focused on a target market and not just re-purposing a packaged radio format (obviously, this is a very specific example for a target industry)...."
-"After a successful real estate sales career, I am transferring my love for people and desire to help to social work. I am particularly drawn to your population because....I read in the NY Times that your agency.....(and make that match)" If you're in sales, you can start out your letter with a provocative question: ""What would you say if I told you I could bring you 300 new clients in 30 days?" If you are a scientific researcher,: "AIDS has always been my passion..."
