Intramural Program Purpose

The purpose of the Intramural Sports Program is to provide exercise, recreation, and fun to participants in a relaxed and structured environment.  Everyone is encouraged to play to the best of their abilities and make an effort to win within the spirit of the rules.  Win-at-all-cost attitudes are inappropriate and strongly discouraged in Intramural Sports.  Participants are expected to behave in a courteous and responsible manner in victory and defeat.  The value of Intramural Sports comes from playing, not winning.

Sportsmanship Rating

A part of the philosophy of the Intramural Program is that good sportsmanship is vital to the conduct of every contest. In order to encourage proper conduct before, during and after a scheduled contest, the Department of Campus Recreation has developed a rating system. The rating system is as follows:

In order for a team to qualify for the post season playoffs they must have:

1. A "4.0" average sportsmanship rating during the regular season.

2. A sufficient win/loss record.

Sportsmanship Rating will be based on the following criteria:

1. A "5.0" will be awarded to a team which demonstrates extremely good sportsmanship and maintains an attitude of complete cooperation.

2. A "4.0" will be awarded to a team if there are no incidents of poor sportsmanship.

3. A "3.0" will be awarded to a team:

When unsportsmanlike conduct is not present in the game except for minor infractions. A team may receive this score or lower depending on the sport if it receives:

a. A yellow card in soccer.

b. A technical foul in basketball.

c. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in flag football, floor hockey or box lacrosse.

d. A verbal warning issued by a supervisor in any sport.

4. A "2.0" will be awarded to a team:

a. When a player or coach is ejected for abusive remarks.

b. If players, other than the captain, persisit in questioning the officials or if any player repeatedly argues with an official.

c. If spectators, clearly related to the team, fail to cooperate with officials.

5. A "1.0" will be awarded to a team:

a. If a player or coach is ejected for striking or shoving an official, opponent or spectator.

b. If a player(s) is (are) so antagonistic to an official that the game cannot be played with proper order and control.

c. If a player(s) disregard(s) warnings of unnecessary roughness.

d. A team that receives a "1.0" will be dropped from the league and their captain must meet with the Intramural Coordinator before they will be allowed to participate in Intramurals again.

Teams must adhere to the sportsmanship regulations by obtaining a "4.0" average in the regular season to qualify for the playoffs. If a teams sportsmanship average drops below a "4.0" during playoff competition, the game will be automatically be forfeited and the other team will be given the win. The Department of Campus Recreation reserves the right to drop any team and/or individual from competition for sportsmanship violations regardless of that team's sportmanship average.

Special Contest Situations:

1. Games which are not rescheduled due to weather, facility problems etc... both teams will receive a No Rating (NR).

2. A team that receives an excused loss will receive a No Rating (NR).

3. A team winning a contest by forfeit or excused loss will receive a No Rating (NR).

4. If a game is cancelled before the start of the second half both teams will receive a sportsmanship rating.

Any player that is ejected, for any reason, will not be eligible to participate in his/her team's next scheduled game. Based upon ejected players actions, the player(s) may have to go before the Intramural Council to decide whether further disciplinary action should be taken.

Consumption of alcoholic beverages by coaches, active players, bench players, and spectators is prohibited. Violators are subject to disciplinary action. Intramural participants may be ejected from the game and suspended from further participation. All teams are responsible for their spectators. Any unsportsmanlike conduct from spectators will be penalized against the team they are "supporting".
